Sixth Grade

Curriculum Overview

Biomedical Sciences Course - Forensics and DNA Profiling

In addition to their core content classes (listed below), students will take the 6th grade biomedical science magnet course. This elective introduces students to the Biomedical Mustang Academy with a focus on Forensics Science.

Students will spend the year focusing on critical information gathered during forensic investigations. They will explore how evidence at a crime scene, such as blood, hair, fingerprints, and shoeprints can help investigators determine what might have occurred and help identify or exonerate potential suspects. Additionally, students will study the structure and function of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), distinguish relationships between chromosomes, DNA and genes, and investigate the significance of DNA in relation to individual identity.

The final quarter ends in a CSI culminating unit where all the knowledge from the first three quarters is applied to the final CSI mock
crime scene investigation.

Upon completion of the 6th grade, students earn the first of three titles in the Biomedical Mustang “Triple Crown” series.

Mathematics

Most magnet students with be placed in 6th grade accelerated math. The accelerated math course provides a faster pace within a rigorous classroom setting for those students who show constant mastery of skills.

Students may test out of 6th grade math and be placed into 7th grade accelerated mathematics (as a 6th grader). Students on this track would be able to take Algebra 1 as a 7th grader and Geometry as an 8th grader, earning them two high school credits in middle school.

Mebane’s goal is to provide a strong foundation in the accelerated curriculum in order to prepare students for 8th grade Algebra or Geometry.

World History

Students in 6th grade world history will explore and track the culture and impact of ancient civilizations such as Egypt, China, the Greeks, Romans, and Empires of the Americas.
