The Howard Bishop Band Program is one of, if not THE largest middle school band program in the Alachua County Public School District. The Bishop Bands pride themselves not only in maintaining a high level of musical excellence but also for making all students who wish to learn how to play a musical instrument feel welcome regardless of income, prior musical experience or level of talent/ability.
The Bishop Band Program does not aim to produce large numbers of professional musicians, but rather large numbers of young people who learn a life-long appreciation for music and develop countless numbers of vital life/social skills that will aid in their success in the workplace and in society.

Concert Band & Symphonic Winds have a long history of receiving SUPERIOR ratings at Florida Bandmasters Association Music Performance Assessments.
Howard Bishop Middle School is one of the only middle schools in Alachua County to allow incoming 6th graders with previous experience on a band instrument to be placed in the Concert Band (Intermediate Level Ensemble) so that they are not only academically challenged but musically challenged as well.
The average G.P.A. of the Howard Bishop Bands was 3.59.
In the last ten years, the winner or runner-up of the school Spelling Bee has been a Bishop Band member.
Bishop Band members are well-rounded and are able to successfully participate in activities such as competitive swimming, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, basketball, football, competitive gymnastics, dance, local theater groups in addition to participating in the Bishop Band program.
Small group instruction is provided on a weekly basis (subject to availability) on all instruments by local university music students or local professional musicians. No other middle school band program in the district provides this amount of specialized instruction to their students.
Every year the Bishop Bands use their musical talents to serve their community by supporting various charities in our area.
The Bishop Bands have performed in several places across the Southeastern United States such as Birmingham, AL, Atlanta, GA and at Walt Disney World in Orlando.
Graduates of the Howard Bishop Band program have gone on to win thousands upon thousands of dollars in college scholarships simply for playing their instrument. Many of those scholarship recipients were not necessarily music majors.
Graduates of the Howard Bishop Band program have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, engineers, scientists, business owners, educators, high-ranking military officers, and professional musicians (most notably, Gainesville's very own Tom Petty).
