What do you need to store? Prepare 3 lists.
● Short term effects: 1 to 7 days
● Medium term effects: 1 to 4 weeks
● Long term effects: 1 to 6 months
Once it is clear what supplies are required, next consider where and how to store them.
● Water-proof, fire-proof and vermin-proof
● Must be able to secure supplies safely and access them relatively easily.
● Emergency supplies isolated from everyday use supplies. These should not be kept underground where there is a risk of flooding or accessibility is limited if building structure is affected.
Store all the things you regularly have. For perishables, keep notes of all the things you use within a week/month and multiply this according to the number of weeks/months and also by the number of people you want your stock to support.
In the event of crisis, it is useful to have at home certain materials:
● Toolbox
● Do-it-yourself equipment and materials – tools, nails, screw etc.
● A little material of plumbing, pipe, serre-flexe, sleeves of all sizes, good quality pipe for watering, able to withstand pressure.
● Plastic covers - 4mx3m or larger fabric
● Cords of various diameters lengths 50m
● String of 100 m length
● Roller of wire (iron or copper) of various diameters
● Electric extensions leads
● A roll of electric cable (50m Ro2V) will be used for equipment breakdown or service or to make further extension leads.
● Adhesive tape of several widths and types.
● Sponges
● Floor cloths
● Sanitizer or disinfectant
● Bleach
● Equipment to make fire, according to the place that one lives in
● Multi-function penknife
● Gas cylinders with burner.
● Store fuels, according to our place of residence
● Collection of water or other containers
● Candles and tea lights
● Torches – wind-up ideally or with rechargeable batteries
● Matches – perhaps store some in waterproof container just in case.
● Oil/gas lamps
● Camp-site gas + refills
● Lighters and fluid re-filler
● Small thermos for drinks and larger thermos for food/cooking (see Key Area: Food and Food Storage – Means of Cooking)
● Food thermometer
● Fire extinguisher
● Bicycles with necessary accessories and spares
