Food waste management is a critical issue worldwide, as it has significant environmental, economic, and social implications. One-third of all food produced globally is lost or wasted, amounting to about 1.3 billion tonnes of food per year.
Effective food waste management involves:
Reduction: Minimizing food waste generation through proper planning, storage, and handling practices.
Recovery: Redirecting surplus food to those in need, through food banks, donations, or other means.
Recycling: Converting food waste into valuable resources like compost, biogas, or animal feed.
Disposal: Ensuring responsible disposal of non-recyclable food waste through landfilling or incineration.
Implementing efficient food waste management practices can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve natural resources, support food security and lower waste management costs. Hence, it is important to educate our young learners on this pertinent issue.

As our group of enthusiastic Waste Warriors collect food wastes every day, the question on what to do with them pushed them to find solution. The team decided to turn them into compost. Using the device that was awarded to GIIS EC some months ago, we began feeding our food decomposter with our food scraps.

The "Waste Warriors," a group of Grade 3- 5 students of GIIS EC, led by Ms Deepika, Ms Jyotsna and Ms Nithya decided to act upon the issue of Food Waste in our school by engaging in an action research. Today, they made themselves available in the canteen to create awareness and teach other students where to dispose food wastes. They also weighed the food wastes collected at the end of each day. This exercise was conducted in the next few days as well.
