GIIS East Coast campus actively participated in the Beach Clean Up in collaboration with WWF on September 3rd, Saturday. Students volunteered along with teachers for the activity. The motto by WWF was to train stduents and teachers to be citizen scientists by collecting plastics data while picking litter to support the stduent of marine pollution and the effort to transform the way we use Plastics.
Plastic pollution can be found almost anywhere in the world. Yet, there isn't sufficient data on the types, quantities, locations and journeys of the debris that litters our global wateways. As a Citizen Scientist, we are trying to help collect data about the litters that are present at our beaches and waterways to contribute to the growing research of plastic pollution in Singapore.
The target was 30kgs and we collected about 60kgs. The collected waste will be sent to NUS for further studies by WWF.
