Middle School Course Descriptions

Transportation STEM: Transportation & Technology

Grades 6-8

How do we move people and products for large and small scale operations? This STEM Intersession will focus on technologies used to transport, explore and investigate transportation in the public and private sectors. Topics for investigation may include magnetic levitation, drones, delivery services, and environmentally clean transportation options. Students will explore topics through hands-on experiences supported by experimenting with the technology equipment at the middle and high schools.

YouDo YouTube

Grades 6-8

ELEPHANT TOOTHPASTE! Have you watched YouTube and always wanted to make elephant toothpaste? This is the intercession for you! YouDo YouTube will have us watching popular YouTube channels and content creators that do cool science experiments and then WE will do them in real life! Mentos and diet coke ✅, erupting volcanoes ✅, dry ice experiments ✅, making slime ✅, just to name a few. Get ready to do what you have seen and thought, “I wish I could do that!”

Be the Change at GMS

Grades 6-8

Interested in supporting your community? Want to develop your leadership skills? Participants in “Be The Change at GMS” will be researching and supporting local organizations through acts of service. They will learn to overcome challenges, communicate with others, and build life skills in a supportive and inclusive environment. Throughout this week, we will foster a sense of belonging and inspire future leaders.

Dance Sports

Grades 6-8

Dance Sports Intersession will be facilitated by Dancing Classrooms RVA, a non-profit organization in Richmond whose mission is to cultivate essential life skills in children through the art of social dance. Not only will students learn dances like Merengue, Foxtrot, Rumba, Swing, line dances and more, but they will also learn about nutrition and participate in a project centered around student interests and goals. RVA History

Grades 6-12

The Week 1 intersession will help highschoolers dive into history, with lessons and hands-on, immersive activities. High schoolers will develop their own lesson or activity to teach history to others. Week 2 will include the same high schoolers teaching their lessons to middle schoolers and experiencing history together. We will also take field trips to Virginia historic sights.

Grades 6-12

Are you interested in sports and recreation of all sorts? Come out and join us to hear from professionals about their careers in recreation, learn basic skills to be a referee, and so much more recreation and sports fun!
