Grades 6-12
The Week 1 intersession will help highschoolers dive into history, with lessons and hands-on, immersive activities. High schoolers will develop their own lesson or activity to teach history to others. Week 2 will include the same high schoolers teaching their lessons to middle schoolers and experiencing history together. We will also take field trips to Virginia historic sights.
Grades 6-12
Are you interested in sports and recreation of all sorts? Come out and join us to hear from professionals about their careers in recreation, learn basic skills to be a referee, and so much more recreation and sports fun!
Grades 9-12
Game design will be an in depth study of board games, video games, role playing games, and outdoor games. Students will experience a variety of games that challenge them to make decisions, step out of their comfort zone, and move beyond what they learned as a child. Field trips in the Goochland and Richmond area will expose participants to social opportunities associated with gaming. By the end of the week, students will create their own game and test it with their peers using principles learned throughout the week.
Grades 9-12
What is an animal? Why do people care about animals? What is the purpose of zoos and aquariums? In this intercession we will learn how to explore the world of taxonomy and identify characteristics possessed by animals. We will learn how to analyze the impacts humans have on the natural world and we will end the class with a field trip where we will practice identifying animals based on their observable characteristics.
Grade 11
This college workshop is geared towards rising seniors who are planning to apply to college in the fall. Our School Counseling team will bring in some experts to the college admissions process and financial aid process and will go over the college search process, admissions, set up Parchment accounts, and begin work on the college applications, and much much more. During the session, we will also have our very own Ms. Holloway-Costa work with our students on writing a scholarship essay. One day of this intersession will be a field trip to go on a couple of college admissions tours.
Grades 9-12
There is no exquisite beauty without some strangeness."-Edgar Allen Poe. How has the Master of the Macabre influenced our everyday media and art? Using Edgar Allen Poe short stories and poems as their anchor texts, students will explore Poe's influence on Pop Culture. From Tim Burton movies to Alexander McQueen's fashion to pop music, students will discover Poe's lasting impact. Then, they will have a chance to continue his legacy through creative projects involving creative writing, film making, and even fashion design.
