Homework week beginning 30.11.20
This is our last week with a focus on reading. This week we will look at understanding what you have read or, reading comprehension.
Open to your favourite 2 pages in the book and use the 10 questions opposite to discuss the book with an adult/older sibling.
P5-7 children could create 3 similar questions that would support you to show your understanding when reading a book. Share them with Mrs Laird through your Chromebooks.
Extra: See the reading bingo games below. These could be fun to do over the Christmas break as well.
Homework week beginning 23.11.20

Homework week beginning 16.11.20
Background
This week we are focusing on reading fluently. Fluency in reading is the ability to read a text accurately, quickly and with expression. Fluency is about repeated practice, based on understanding and using the skill in other areas so they can be maintained for life. In the early stages when reading books are shorter, it is easier to ask pupils to read and re-read the same book several times. This is important for developing speed, fluency and intonation when reading. These are also essential skills for understanding, as if a person is not reading fluently, it will be difficult for them to retain the words read in a sentence long enough to understanding the meaning of the sentence.
It is important to give our developing readers the opportunity to practice their reading skills to a level of fluency that helps them to read with ease, expression and thus understanding.
P1-5
Homework this week helps develop these skills. Below are sight words for each stage. Children may also have been given these home for the books they are reading in class. These can be used as flash cards and to play games such as snap, pairs, bingo, treasure hunts to find the words around the house. Maybe you can create a game to play? Share it with Mrs Laird or your class teacher.
Reading Sight Words - Oxford Reading Tree
P5/6-7
Take the book you are currently reading and read aloud a page or paragraph each (with a parent or older sibling.) Discuss any difficult words.
Pay attention to;
Punctuation
Accuracy (reading the words correctly.)
A correct pace (not too slow or fast with the sentences flowing.)
Expression (read with feeling. Try not to sound like a robot. Make your reading interesting.)
You can find some speech in your book to practise expression - try to read it like you are the character. Can you act it out like in a play?
