School-to-Home Connection

I am so excited to start our year together! We will be working on establishing new routines and increasing stamina in reading and writing.

I would like to create an email group to let parents/guardians know when this website has been updated. Please email me from the account you'd like to receive these updates and I will collect your email address.

Please review these pages to see what your child will be learning and how you can support him or her. I look forward to working with you to help your son/daughter reach their potential.

Reminders

  • Please send a healthy snack with your child to school each day.

  • Please help your child return their purple homework folder daily.

  • It is important that students read 20 minutes each night and complete their reading log.

  • If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact me at xxxxx@glastonburyus.org.

Classroom Update

When school begins, we will get to know each other during a variety of fun activities. We will get to know each other and will work on learning our class routines. Your child will also be assessed in reading and math in September once they have adjusted back to the school routine.

Reader's and Writer's Workshop

We will launch Reader's and Writer's Workshop. Students will learn the tools and routines they use to work productively and respectfully as members of their classroom reading and writing communities. They will set goals to build their skills and independence.

Math

In math we will begin to emphasize that the answer is not the most important part, but rather the process. Mistakes are okay. We will learn the structure of the math block beginning with math talks and ending with a share and closure. We will continue with Unit 2.1 where students become familiar with the value of a dime and then a nickel. They work with groups of these coins and find their total value by skip counting and repeated addition, using the hundred chart and number line. They learn about the open number line. We will also learn about the topic of even and odd numbers. Students learn that even numbers of objects can be put into pairs or into two equal groups, and relate this to skip counting and repeated addition.

Social Studies

Our social studies curriculum is organized around the five themes of history, geography, civics, economics, and culture. In 2nd grade students begin their study of these themes by exploring the structure and purpose of a variety of communities.

Science

In science we will be studying Earth: Our Changing Planet over the coming months. Students will use information and models to identify and represent the shapes and kinds of land and bodies of water in an area and where water is found on Earth. Students will apply their understanding of the idea that wind and water can change the shape of land to compare design solutions to slow or prevent such change.
