Classroom Update

Reader's Workshop

This month we are beginning our first unit called, "A Reading Growth Spurt." Students will read with energy and enthusiasm to tackle hard words and do the big work of reading with fluency and stamina. They will also think deeply about the books they read as grown-up readers to build their comprehension skills.

Writer's Workshop

We are working on our Small Moment Stories. Students will write about stories that matter to them. They will bring characters to life by making them move and talk, think and feel and learn how to draw on simple craft moves, such as choosing precise words, to create a particular effect.

Math

This month we are beginning our unit on Measuring Length. Students will measure a variety of objects several times. They will develop a sense of the standard units of inch, centimeter, foot, and meter. Students will develop the ability to choose the right tools and units to measure objects. We will also find the difference between the length of two objects. This month we will also beginning Addition within 100. We will combine numbers by thinking about the values of their digits, combining tens with tens and ones with ones.

Social Studies

We are beginning to explore communities. We will learn about what a community is and what is in a community. Students will study the skills of geography, economics, and citizenship in the context of learning about communities. Students will design their own community with a group, including places for people to live, work, play, and solve problems.. Additionally, we will learn about the different kinds of communities and community geography and environment.

Science

We will study Earth: Our Changing Planet over the coming months. Students will use information and models to identify and represent the shapes and kinds of land and bodies of water in an area and where water is found on Earth. Students will apply their understanding of the idea that wind and water can change the shape of land to compare design solutions to slow or prevent such change.
