Mr. Jahnke has worked extensively with the science department in order to implement cotaught courses that follow best practices with fidelity while keeping a growth mindset. Although Mr. Jahnke did not major in science education, he has spent a substantial amount of time and effort in order to ensure best practices for coteaching were ting place in the classroom.
Mr. Jahnke was fortunate enough to begin his coteaching experience with Miss. Balaskas in Earth and Physical Science. Thanks to the science department's extensive curriculum planning and Miss Balaskas uncanny attention to detail; Mr. Jahnke was able to lend his hand in modifying and adapting the curriculum throughout the school year to meet our student's diverse learning needs.
Mr. Jahnke and Miss Balaskas are collaborating and coteaching in a junior level science class, using our strengths as individual teachers to create a classroom culture that provides high quality instruction to students with diverse learning needs. Mr. Jahnke and Miss Balaskas focus on engaging students through direct instruction as well as inquiry based activities to ensure student growth.
Mr. Jahnke and Mrs. Henkel have been coteaching Conceptual Chemistry together for two consecutive years. During this time a new curriculum has been developed that promotes inquiry learning through collaborative activities, labs and teacher led instruction. Each unit is designed to relate concepts students experience in everyday life in connection with chemistry to deepen student learning within the context of their daily living.
Students work collaboratively as they develop new thinking skills related to more complex areas of science. students begin to relate that science, although separate in disciplines , is always related in some form to each other. Students are assessed in a variety of ways including group projects, lab reports, summative assessments, and individual products. Mr. Jahnke and Mrs. Henkel work hard to ensure that all activities, labs and tests used in class are meaningful for our students in rigor while also ensuring best practice in universal design takes places for all students to achieve.
