**We do not have any current mentor openings, but please apply if you are interested to be added to our waiting list. **
We are looking for mentors who are 17 yrs +. Mentors may apply by submitting a school district volunteer application to the Community Education office. We ask mentors to commit to a full program year (8 weeks broken into 2 - 4 week segments). We ask mentors to prioritize training and debrief meetings. All mentors must attend a in-person meeting with the Community Education Director and complete required training requirements before volunteering. We encourage mentors to renew their commitment annually in hopes they may build a long-term relationship with their student match.
The volunteer application link is posted to the right.
“ One of the most important things you can do as a mentor is to help your mentee develop self-esteem and self-confidence. ”
“Mentors don’t make you great. They help you find the greatness within.” -TFI Alum Noah Morton
Young adults who face an opportunity gap but have a mentor are 55% more likely to be enrolled in college than those who did not have a mentor. (The Mentoring Effect, 2014)
A study showed that the strongest benefit from mentoring, and most consistent across risk groups, was a reduction in depressive symptoms — particularly noteworthy given that almost one in four youth reported worrisome levels of these symptoms at baseline. (The Role of Risk, 2013)
Mentors are asked to read the resource 'Building Relationships: A Guide for New Mentors' as training for participating as a mentor in the STAR Program.
How will I be matched with a student?
The Community Education Director and School Counselor will work together to match you to the student we feel is the best match.
For off campus activities, am I required to drive my student?
No, for all off campus activities, school district staff provides transportation in our school van for students only. Mentors are asked to meet their students at the specified location.
What if I cannot attend a night?
We understand that you may have prior commitments or that something may come up last minute. That is okay! Just let us know! We encourage you to attend all 8 weeks as much as possible.
Can I meet my student during the week or take them to an activity off campus outside of program time?
No, as your relationship started under the STAR Program, all mentors must commit to closure at the end of the 8 weeks and will not have any contact with that student outside of the STAR Program until the next program year. Mentors may arrange to meet their student at school to have lunch together with the school counselor or the Community Education Director.
