Welcome to 7th Grade Composition & Grammar
"You don't write because you want to say something, you write because you have something to say." F. Scott Fitzgerald
In seventh grade, scholars grow in their command of language through the study of grammar, sentence structure, and composition. Scholars learn to recognize and diagram increasingly complex sentences, examining the relationships among clauses, phrases, and the parts of speech. Through this study, they develop precision, clarity, and an appreciation for the order and beauty of the English language.
In composition, scholars learn to gather, organize, and communicate ideas with clarity and purpose. Using the Journeys in Writing program, they practice taking notes, writing from sources and images, summarizing, narrating, and developing both creative and formal compositions. As they progress toward the formal essay critique, scholars learn that good writing begins with good thinking: ordering the mind, choosing words carefully, and communicating truth with grace and precision.
Scholars will work through nine units over the course of a semester:
Notemaking and Outlines
Writing from Notes
Retelling Narrative Stories
Summarizing a Reference
Writing from Pictures
Summarizing from Multiple References
Inventive Writing
Formal Essay Models
Formal Critique
