LONG-TERM SUSPENSIONS:
"Long-Term Suspension" means the temporary withdrawal of the privilege of attending school and school-related functions in the District for a period of eleven (11) consecutive school days up to one hundred and eighty (180) consecutive school days.
The long-term suspension would include the 10-day DHO suspension plus any additional days issued by the DHO.
You may request a formal hearing to appeal a long-term suspension or expulsion. The request must be within five working days after notification of the long-term suspension. You would need to contact the office of Ms. Marcie Taylor at 480-497-3306.
Per GPS Policies and Regulations, only a suspension for more than ten days or a recommendation for expulsion may be appealed. Therefore, orders such as reassignment, community service, behavior plans, or other interventions may not be appealed.
The length of the long-term suspension will determine if the student is withdrawn during the long-term suspension. This is normally the case unless the long-term suspension is only a few days. Please contact our office before the suspension end date, at least three weeks before the new semester starts, if the student needs to be re-enrolled at Gilbert Public Schools.
EXPULSIONS:
"Expulsion" means the permanent withdrawal of the privilege of attending any GPS school.
A student recommended for expulsion will be long-term suspended during the expulsion process.
If you would like to request an appeal of the long-term suspension, as mentioned above, this will be conducted at the same time as the expulsion hearing.
The expulsion procedure will be conducted in accordance with GPS Policy 5-306A, which includes the expulsion hearing being conducted by an approved non-district hearing officer.
A student expelled from the District may request readmission by making a written application to the Board. Readmission to the District is at the discretion of the Board. In addition, it is the prerogative of the Board to stipulate appropriate conditions for readmission, including assigning the student to a particular school.
A student may apply to the Board for readmission no earlier than nine (9) months after the date of the expulsion; however, the student may not be readmitted until at least one (1) calendar year has passed.
