The after school student aide program is unlike most in the state. We normally have a staff of 14-18 CV students that work hands on along with the staff ATC's to provide medical coverage for all of our 21 interscholastic sports which entails being responsible for approximately 800+ athletes. Student aide duties include practice setup, wound triage, treatments, supervision of rehabilitation, practice coverage, taping, etc. Student aides typically work 3-4 days a week depending on the athletic season. All hours they volunteer goes towards community service which opens up many scholarship opportunities. Each student aide typically finishes the year with approximately 600-800 hours which looks amazing on a college transcript. In order to become a student aide, it is an application process that starts in the spring time. If accepted, most students will work in the program for their entire high school tenure.
It is possible to be an athlete as well as student aide. Students are able to take one season off (of the 3) to compete in an interscholastic sport. The program is very flexible to accommodate athletes. During the fall season, students normally rotate coverage around the football/volleyball teams while still providing care to all other fall teams. During the winter/spring seasons, student aides are assigned to one sport and they stay with that sport the whole season.
Along will all the work they do on campus, our student aides have received state recognition as being some of the best in the state. The Lanny Williams award is given to the top 3 student aides along with a $500 scholarship. In the past 5 years, Campo has had 4 recipients of this award. Overall, Mr. Blackburn has had 18 winners of this award in the last 23 years.
Campo Verde sports med is also very involved in HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America). HOSA is an international student organization intended to provide service to those young adults interested in pursuing a career in the health sciences. It hosts state/international competitions each year in a multitude of health career fields. CV is active in many career areas but have excelled in the sports medicine competition. In the last 5 years, CV students have won sports med at the state level 4 times and 2 of those years they placed in the top 20 internationally. Overall, Mr. Blackburn has been doing HOSA for 8 years and has had his students win the state for sports medicine for 7 of those years; with one overall international champion.

In 2017, we started a tradition to take the group on college trips to give them an opportunity to see campuses in person. It is an amazing experience to be able to see the actual facilities first hand and being able to talk to campus personnel about campus life, financial aid, etc. One of the many things that makes the Campo Verde Sports Medicine program so special.
