Things to Know

Math Facts:

  • Have your child complete the addition and subtraction math facts. They may answer these facts using multiple strategies:

      • Number Line (see link)

      • Mental strategies

      • Memorization

      • Drawing pictures/dots

      • Manipulatives

Here is a video that shows some different strategies to help solve problems.

Skip Counting: (2’s, 5’s and 10’s)

  • Have your child complete the daily skip counting section for each day of the week. They can use the attached hundreds chart to help them if needed.

Number Line

Click here for a printable number line. Please use the number line to help your child with addition and subtraction facts. Do not let them rely only on the number line, they can also count up/down, use mental math and visualize/draw pictures.

Math Activity - Measurement

Here is a video to help introduce your child to the concept of non standard measurement.

Measure A Friend (Sibling/Parent Activity)

  • Please have your child use nonstandard forms of measurement (paperclips, crayons, spoons, coins, same sized Lego, noodles, cheerios, etc.)

  • This activity does not need to be printed, students can record their observations on a sheet of paper or whiteboard.


Ordering Lengths Activity

  • Have your child cut different lengths of string or paper strips and put them in order from shortest to longest/longest to shortest. As an extension have your child organize different objects in the same way.

  • Recording Sheet (you do not need to print, it is just a visual).

Math Activity - Measurement

Measure on the Move

  • Please have your child use nonstandard forms of measurement (paperclips, crayons, spoons, coins, same sized Lego, noodles, cheerios, etc.) Students should use the same form of nonstandard measurement for each object.

  • This activity does not need to be printed, students can record their observations on a sheet of paper or whiteboard. Students can also find objects around the house to estimate and measure.

  • Please send us a picture of your child doing this activity!

  • As an extension students can do this activity multiple times using different forms of nonstandard measurement.

Measure and Order

  • Have your child choose 3 different objects from around the house (be creative)! Students will then measure each object (use the same form of non standard measurement for each item). Have your child record their findings on a piece of paper from shortest to longest (have them colour and label each object).

Trace your shoe and measure it with 3 different objects from around your house!

Math Activity - Mass

Watch this video about mass. Make a hanger scale. Click here to see how. You could attach plastic cups or even grocery bags to the hanger. Find objects around the house to compare. First make a prediction and then see which item is heavier and which item is lighter by placing them in the cups or bags.

Math Activity - Surface Area

Area is the amount of space within a flat shape. For example we can measure the amount of space on the top of your kitchen table or the floor of your room. Draw a robot and measure the area of each part. Click here to get the recording sheet.

Math Activity - Capacity

Watch this video to learn about capacity!

Activity 1:

Find 3 containers around your house and measure how many cups of water fit in each. Which one has the largest capacity? Which one has the smallest capacity? Challenge: Can you find 2 containers that are different shapes but have the SAME capacity?

Activity 2:

Do some baking! We measure capacity all of the time when we are in the kitchen. Try making a recipe and talk about the different measuring spoons and cups that you use. Here is a recipe for Banana Muffins and Playdough.

Activity 1:

  • Watch this video about 3D shapes! Print and cut out these “nets” to create your own 3D shapes.

Activity 2:

  • Geometry Scavenger Hunt: Can you find objects around your house that are 3D shapes? Find something around your house that is shaped like a cube, cone, cylinder, sphere and rectangular prism. Click here and use these sheets to help you.

Math Activity - Faces, Edges & Vertices

Watch this video about edges, faces and vertices on 3D shapes.

Activity 1:

Build 3D objects using toothpicks and marshmallows! (Or use something from around the house such as playdough or jelly beans). Count how many edges, faces and vertices each shape has. Here is a recording Sheet.

Challenge:

Use your building materials to build a tall tower!

Math Activity

Activity 1: Geometric Shape Craft

Create a picture by cutting out geometric shapes and gluing them together. Draw the shapes with a pencil before cutting! For example this train to the left is made of rectangles, squares, triangles and circles. Use your imagination! You could also just draw and colour a picture with shapes if you do not have coloured paper or glue at home.
