Math Interventions

Please contact a math consultant or Math@ghaea.org for more information or support with use.

Math Interventions most commonly used by special education in our agency include:

Whole Number Foundations (K)

This intervention is recommended for students with minimal or beginning understanding of numbers 1- 20. These students would be at the earliest levels on early math learning progressions. Book 1 focuses on numbers 1-10, Book 2 focuses on numbers 11-20. Kindergarten content around number is covered at a very slow pace.

Intervention Implementation

  • 50 lessons

  • Designed to take about 20 minutes

  • Partially scripted lessons are chunked with 4 lessons or more and then a check for understanding(Check point). Bold print is used to assist to for sections needing precise teacher language.

Number Sense Intervention

This intervention is recommended for students who have some but limited understanding of number. These students need work beyond 20 or can learn content quickly. They would be at early levels on learning progression. Kindergarten content is covered including number, relationships and operations. This intervention moves at a faster pace than Whole Number Foundations.

Intervention Implementation

  • 24 lessons

  • Designed to take about 30 minutes

  • Scripted lessons are designed for easy administration. The script is in bold text throughout the lessons.

Bridges Intervention

This intervention is recommended for students with IEPs in grades 2 - 6. It is generally for students who have better understanding of number and are functioning at the upper levels on early math learning progression. K-2 content is covered, but limited time spent on the earliest skills. This intervention requires some study to navigate through the materials.

Intervention Implementation

  • Each volume has between 8 -13 modules and covers a big idea over multiple grades. A module contains 5 sessions for a total of 40 -65 sessions.

  • Sessions are designed to take about 30 minutes

  • There is some flexibility in each session with 2 or 3 warm-ups, a game or activity and 2 versions of guided practice pages.

Do the Math

This is a recommended resource for students with math IEPs in grades 3-6. There are 13 modules covering the topics of:

  • Number Core (1)

  • Addition and Subtraction (3)

  • Multiplication (3)

  • Division (3)

  • Fractions (3)

Intervention Implementation

  • 30 lessons per module

  • Sessions are designed to take about 30 minutes

  • Scripted lessons are chunked with 4 lessons and then a check for understanding, “Show What You Know”.

SOAR (Supporting Ongoing Achievement Responsibly)

This is a recommended resource for students with math IEPs in Middle and High School. Our AEA has purchased the rights to these materials so they are free to districts in GHAEA once training has been completed.

SOAR tools and activities are available for the following concepts:

  • Understanding Numbers in Base Ten

  • Adding and Subtracting Situation Problems

  • Multiplication and Division of Situation Problems

  • Fractions as Numbers and Operating with Fractions

  • Ratios and Proportional Relationships

  • Expressions and Equations

Intervention Implementation

  • Multiple folders in each topic with activities aligned to survey and designed to support learning in making sense, creating and using representations, using strategies and providing explanations.

  • Activities are designed to take about 45 minutes

  • Lessons are not scripted so require additional prep by teacher. The lesson focus, essential mathematical understandings, and questions to target those understandings are given.
