Dear Garvey School District Parents:
Opioid abuse continues to be a problem in communities throughout California, and Los Angeles County is no exception. Fentanyl and most recently Rainbow Fentanyl abuse is on the rise. Rainbow fentanyl is a brightly colored fentanyl that can be found in many forms, including pills, powder, and blocks that can resemble sidewalk chalk or candy. Any pill (regardless of its color, shape, or size) that does not come from a health care provider or pharmacist can contain fentanyl and can be deadly.
Fentanyl is extremely potent and it only takes a very small dose, 2 milligrams about the size of the tip of a pencil, to be lethal. Please speak with your children about the dangers of fentanyl and ingesting any medication not prescribed to them by their doctor and given to them by a trusted family member or adult. As we enter the Halloween season, please remind your children not to eat any unwrapped or unpackaged candy. During Red Ribbon Week in October, our middle school students will learn about the dangers and consequences of fentanyl.

One Chip Challenge is NOT allowed at School!
Dear Garvey School District Parents:
We are asking for your help in protecting our students from the dangers of the “One Chip Challenge,” a social media challenge that has sent both children and adults to hospitals in several states.
In this challenge, students are encouraged to record and post their reaction as they eat a single tortilla chip seasoned with Carolina Reaper pepper and stinging Scorpion pepper.
Eating these chips can cause serious reactions, including intense stomach pain, profuse vomiting, chest pain and difficulty breathing.
Please talk with your children about the dangers of participating in these types of challenges and help them develop the skills they need to “say no” to dangerous activities.
In addition, please ensure your child does not bring these chips or other similar items to school.

Estamos solicitando su colaboración para proteger a nuestros alumnos de los peligros del reto “One Chip Challenge,” es un reto en las redes sociales que ha resultado en la hospitalización tanto de niños como adultos en diferentes estados del país.
