One of the things that I have noticed with students over the past few years is a growing lack of motivation and interest in school. I think that this course on Project Based Learning helped address this observation. Students need to see learning as something that holds meaning to them, and in order for that to be more possible, student agency needs to take more of a role in the classroom.
Student agency will allow the students to have more of a voice and active role in their learning experience opportunities. One of the ways that I see myself being able to do this more effectively at first is by implementing “Genius Hour” into my regular routine. This approach seems possible for me to start immediately with hopes of providing more PBL activities for my students in the future. Genius Hour allows me to balance the district/building math standards and curriculum requirements with a PBL experience for my students.
In a year from now, I hope that Genius Hour will be a regular part of my schedule. I hope to find more ways to incorporate Problem Based Learning activities into my instruction. I also hope to see students excited about what they are learning, creating, and sharing with the world around them.
