RESCoPE
The Research Experiences in Southeastern Coastal Plain Ecosystems (RESCoPE) program at Georgia Southern University is focused on providing meaningful research experience, mentoring, and professional development for the next generation of undergraduate scholars. Each year, we welcome ten fellows into our ten-week program for a summer of research and fun in the Georgia sunshine! Alongside a faculty mentor, fellows design, execute, present an individual research project during the program. Additionally, fellows attend workshops led by local program partners to gain experience in research techniques and for exposure to career pathways. Provided seminars give fellows insight into the graduate school application process, teach fellows about statistical analyses, and enhance fellow's science communication skills. Fellows are also able to visit several sites for overnight field trips during the program including the Georgia Aquarium, the Okefenokee Swamp, and the coast of South Carolina for a coastal restoration project!
NSF REU
The National Science Foundation's Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) initiative is a research program network designed to engage currently-enrolled undergraduates in research activity. The program has a long and successful history and has provided countless students with critical direct experience in STEM fields. REUs are great options for students looking to increase their knowledge in research ahead of future graduate school pursuits!
RESCoPE is dedicated to providing research experience to a diverse community of undergraduate scholars through independent research projects and exposure to skills and techniques in research. Our holistic and interdisciplinary focus on coastal plains ecosystems encompasses a wide range of potential research areas!
Our program includes a diverse array of faculty mentors from the departments of Biology, Geology, and Geography with wide ranging research areas. Direct mentorship from a faculty mentor combined with group mentoring through workshops and seminars is invaluable for young researchers.
By joining a ten-student cohort, fellows are able to grow socially and personally during their RESCoPE experience! Fellows are fully engrained in the Department of Biology at Georgia Southern University, giving an opportunity to see research being conducted in an academic setting.
