Students and Parents:
Welcome to Core Algebra One! I know that working together this will be a great year!
Supplies: The following is a list of materials that you will need for this class.
1 inch 3 ring binder
Notebook paper
Pencils (with erasers)
One Package of Black Dry Erase Markers
One Box of Kleenex
TI-84+ Graphing Calculator for your personal use (recommended)
Calculators:
It is strongly recommended that all students have a TI-84+ graphing calculator for personal use. You can use online calculators (Desmos.com - free) or a cell phone calculator (Calculate84 in the App store or wabbitemu for Android - free) to work on homework.
Classroom Rules:
1. RESPECT yourself, others, and property: Respect is essential to a great learning environment.
2. BE PREPARED: Complete your work, be ready to learn, and have the needed materials.
3. MAKE A POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION: This includes being on task and following school rules.
Course Topics:
Algebraic Expressions, Writing & Solving Equations, Linear Equations, Systems of Linear Equations, Linear Inequalities, Domain & Range, Laws of Exponents, Polynomials, Radicals, Quadratic Functions, Exponential Functions, Comparing Functions, Arithmetic and Geometric Sequences
Tutorials:
Every morning before school 8:15 AM - 8:35 AM (exceptions may include dates of mandatory staff meetings, as well as days I am assigned to duty).
Tuesdays and Thursdays: Library Nights from 4:15 - 5:45 PM in the GHS Library
Mondays and Wednesdays: Homework Haven from 4:00 - 4:45 PM in my room 177
Textbook Available, if desired: We will be using the book, Algebra 1, by Carter, Cuevas, Day, and Malloy, published by McGraw Hill.
Semester Grades: Each nine weeks grade is 45% and the semester exam is 10% of your semester grade.
Nine Week Grades:
Daily Work 30%:
· Homework: Expect to have homework every night. Homework may be graded on a completion basis or may be graded for accuracy, and is due at the beginning of class.
· Quizzes: Expect a homework quiz on a regular basis. Quizzes will count as two daily grades.
Tests 70%: We will have a minimum of three test grades each grading period. All tests will be announced at least one week in advance. Students who do not pass a test may take a retest within 5 days of notification of the failing grade. Tutorials should take place prior to the retest. The maximum score on a retest is 70. Retests are not available for projects or for semester exams. In Advanced Algebra One, only one retest will be available per nine weeks.
Optional Binder Test: Each 9 weeks you will have the opportunity to turn in your organized binder with all your notes, quizzes, homework, warm-ups, reviews, etc. If you have all of your work saved in an organized manner, you can earn a grade of up to a 100 for a test grade for demonstrating your good study habits and personal responsibility.
Make Up Work:
You will be given one school day for each day you were absent to turn in makeup work. Come in before or after school, during tutorials, to complete makeup tests. If you are absent without permission (truant) you will get a zero for the work missed.
Late Work:
Late work is defined as work not turned in on time, but not due to an excused or unexcused absence. The following penalties apply to late work:
- 10 points for one school day late
- 20 points for two school days late
- 30 points for three school days late
A grade of zero for work turned in on the fourth day late
