The TMEA All-State process is a fantastic way for choir-loving students to take their passion to the next level: strengthening choral singing and sight-reading skills, singing incredible music, and making lifelong friendships along the way. Here is a breakdown of the audition process, as stated on the TMEA website:
"The All-State audition process begins throughout the state in each of the TMEA Regions. Individual musicians perform selected music for a panel of judges who rank each instrument or voice part. From this ranking, a select group of musicians advances from their Region to TMEA Area competitions and from there the highest-ranking qualify to perform in a TMEA All-State music group. These All-State students participate in three days of rehearsals during the annual state TMEA Clinic/Convention, and their performances before thousands of attendees bring this extraordinary event to a close."
Tell the directors! They will give you the sheet music and practice tracks that you need to get started. Once you have your music, keep track of it- it is yours, and you are required to have it to audition.
Practice, practice, practice. Most of your preparation for these auditions has to happen on your own time, whether that means singing at home or coming to the choir room before school.
Come to sectionals and music workshops. The directors will begin sectionals soon either before or after school. Do your best to attend all of them- they will only help you.
Enjoy the music! We know auditions can feel daunting, but at the end of the day, you are singing incredible music. Stop and smell the flowers.
Ask for help before it's crunch time. Self-explanatory!

"Just give it your all. And if you make a mistake, remember to cherish it and learn from it because doing so will help you advance and become a better musician."

"Although the TMEA process is a choral competition that focuses on the musicality you choose to use with an ensemble piece, it is still a definite challenge. Even if you don’t advance your first year in, you still have the ability to identify your strengths and weaknesses when performing intense choral music. Not only do you challenge yourself by rehearsing in the choir room every day for school performances along with the TMEA audition process; you also create a special bond with a select few students who choose to make the same commitment you did, and you are in that fight together."
-Sarah Owofade
"I gained a lot from the last TMEA Audition. Even though I did not pass the district round, it taught me how to better audition for the TMEA Music and All-State Competition because it really showed me that balancing other commitments is really important. I was super busy and I did not know how to balance everything and schedule it right. After that audition, I learned how to schedule all of my conflicts and commitments better. Over time, I was able to schedule and have more time for other things that I really wanted to do than I thought I would have."
-Torrance Crary
"TMEA is such a learning experience! I learned things that apply to my other activities in school and met people from other schools who are so sweet. Just a good community of people who love music, just like I do! I met countless talented people who I see everywhere and give them giant hugs!"
