By Air
Three major airports serve the Washington, DC area: Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), and Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI). Both IAD and DCA offer convenient metro access. DCA is the closest airport to Georgetown University, while Dulles is the largest and serves th highest number of flights, particularly international ones. BWI is the farthest from DC (and closer to Baltimore), but it can be a more affordable option, as some airlines offer lower fares there.
All three airports provide taxi services at Ground Transportation, as well as SuperShuttle, a shared, door-to-door van service. For fares and pickup locations, check the SuperShuttle website. Reservations are not required when departing from the airport. However, for return trips to the airport, passengers should book online or call 1-800-BLUE-VAN (800-258-3826).
Ride services like Uber and Lyft are also widely used and may offer more competitive rates than those listed above.
From Dulles International Airport
MetroBus 5A ($7) is an express bus that departs from the airport’s lower level (Section E) and serves both Rosslyn MetroRail Station and L’Enfant Plaza (downtown DC). To reach Georgetown University, riders should get off at the Rosslyn stop, the closest Metro station to campus. From Rosslyn, Georgetown can be reached by taxi, Uber/Lyft, or bus (GUTS or MetroBus A58). It is also possible to walk across Key Bridge and reach Georgetown’s main campus in approximately 15 minutes.
Silver Line is a metro service which connects Washington Dulles International Airport directly to Rosslyn Metro Station in approximately 45 minutes (14 stops). Tickets for the Silver Line Express can be purchased at the ticket counter located inside the station.
From Reagan National Airport
MetroRail’s Blue Line stops adjacent to Terminals B and C at National Airport. Take the Blue Line toward Largo Town Center and get off at Rosslyn. From Rosslyn, you can reach the Georgetown area by bus (GUTS or MetroBus A58) or by taxi. Alternatively, you may walk across the Key Bridge and reach Georgetown University’s main campus in approximately 15 minutes.
From Baltimore-Washington International
MetroBus B30 ($7) runs between BWI and the Greenbelt Metro Station (Green Line). There are two B30 stops at BWI: one on the lower level of the International Pier and another on the lower level of Concourse A/B. From Greenbelt Station, take the Green Line toward downtown Washington, DC. To continue to Rosslyn, transfer at L’Enfant Plaza to the Orange Line (direction: Vienna) or the Blue Line (direction: Franconia/Springfield). To continue to Dupont Circle, transfer at Gallery Place/Chinatown to the Red Line (direction: Shady Grove). From either Rosslyn or Dupont Circle, you can reach Georgetown via (GUTS [free] or MetroBus routes A58, C91), taxi, or Uber/Lyft.
The Maryland Transit Authority’s MARC Penn Line runs from BWI to Union Station in Washington, DC, with fares typically around $8. Check the MTA website for current prices and directions to the train platform. From Union Station, you can take the Red Line toward Shady Grove to Dupont Circle and continue by taxi or bus (GUTS [Dupont Circle] or MetroBus C91, D94, D96).
Amtrak also operates trains from the BWI Rail Station to Union Station in downtown DC. Free shuttle buses connect the airport terminals to the BWI Rail Station. For schedules and additional information, visit the Amtrak website or call 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245). Fares vary and tend to increase closer to the departure date; currently, the lowest fares start at approximately $6 (check the website for updates).
By Train
Trains from across the U.S. arrive directly downtown at Union Station, with Amtrak providing the largest passenger rail service. If you are traveling from Virginia or Maryland, commuter rails can be a more affordable and reliable option. The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) operates on weekdays from Fredericksburg and Manassas, with stops in Alexandria, VA, and downtown DC. Note that VRE trains run only in the direction of commuter traffic and do not operate on weekends. Maryland’s MARC trains now offer both weekday and weekend service into DC.
To reach Georgetown from Union Station, you can take a taxi or the Metro Red Line toward Shady Grove, getting off at Dupont Circle. From there, buses (such as the GUTS Dupont Circle or MetroBus C91), taxis, or ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft can take you directly to Georgetown.
By Bus
Metro Rail trains and Metro Buses are operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). For more information including a real-time trip planner, please check their website.
Rosslyn Station

From Rosslyn Station, you can take MetroBus A58 toward East Farragut Square and get off at the stop at M Street and 34th Street (the first stop after the bridge). From there, it is a short walk to the main gate of Georgetown University.
Alternatively, you can take the Georgetown University Transportation Shuttle (GUTS) from Rosslyn (stop located at 19th and Moore Streets). For details about the shuttle service, visit the GUTS website. Please note that the GUTS shuttle does not operate on Sundays.
