We at FuEL encourage students to learn strategies and science and engage in hands-on experience as part of their training and education to become future environmental leaders. As part of our mission to educate students in environmentalism and sustainability, we seek to educate students by demonstrating best practices that can be carried in their own backyards.
We are based in Washington, D.C., but are accessible to students outside the United States capital via Zoom. FuEL's campus uses solar panels and recycled water for faculty, staff, and student activities. Our partnership with Citibike allows students to engage in daily physical activity and transport between campus buildings and local areas of interest with a more sustainable method of transportation.
Our class materials are all accessible via Canvas sites to reduce the risk of waste, but we print using only 100% recycled paper and utilize 3D printing opportunities to reduce material waste as students create models of their projects and proposals. We encourage students to use repurposed laptops and tablets throughout their education.
To limit the risk of pollution from transportation and teach sustainable, healthy eating, we feed our students organic whole foods from the student-maintained garden with a compost area for food scraps and locally sourced produce. This practice educates students on healthy eating and reducing food waste.
Our Green Office program is a student-led think tank where they propose ideas, strategies, policies, and best practices to keep the campus as green as possible. They meet every quarter and present yearly reports on carbon emissions and renewable energy breakthroughs that our campus seeks to follow to expand our carbon footprint. Even before starting their first semesters, students are welcome to get involved with the Green Office to discuss ideas and collaborate with classmates to create a healthier environment for themselves and their community. The program is funded through the university, but students are responsible for supplemental fundraising
We seek to model for other universities how to practice sustainability and preserve Mother Nature by encouraging student innovation in research and promoting internship opportunities. Students are trained to identify ongoing and future innovations to meet tomorrow's environmental challenges and ensure a safer, healthier natural environment. At FuEL, we utilize established and developing methods of sustainability and conservation to educate our students, partners, and other universities on environmental preservation and maintenance.
