Attendees will emerge with a clear sense of how to advance the DEI agenda through engagement and action.
This event seeks to topple monolithic notions of Black Womanhood. Through truthful and nuanced conversation, we will complicate our understanding of Black Womanhood by exploring the layers of Black Women’s rich and textured experiences. We will explore questions such as: what does it mean for blackness and womanness to intersect with other identities on the “diversity wheel”? What does it mean to simultaneously occupy identities across the spectrums of gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, ability, citizenship, skin color, wealth, neurodiversity? How do privilege and race play different or overlapping roles in diverse cultural contexts? And how does the experience of being African American differ between specific African communities and the United States?
The guest speaker is Chloe Dulce Louvouezo, a Congolese-American author of the newly published book, Life, I Swear: Intimate Stories from Black Women on Identity, Healing and Self-Trust, and the Executive Producer and Host of the "Life, I Swear" podcast. Through the book and podcast, Chloe excavates her personal story and the stories of some of today’s most influential Black female voices, on their private journeys through pain, joy, transformation, growth and unapologetic self-love. Ms. Louvouezo is a Senior Communications Officer at The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Commissioner on Washington, DC Mayor Bowser’s Commission for Women, and co-founder of Open Door Concept in Northeast DC.

How do you speak to the weight of a moment in a respectful and genuine manner that resonates with diverse members of your community? What decision-making process should you consider as you put together a statement of solidarity and action plan? What systems can be put in place to ensure you are doing no harm in your efforts of solidarity and inclusion?

Considering the events surrounding racial justice and inequality that have been taking place in our country in recent months, we believe that strengthening our graduate student community with social events can serve as a tool to get to know each other and to address these issues on and off campus with a dialectical approach. As a result, GradGov, GAGE, Diversity and Inclusion @ Georgetown, and Georgetown Women in International Affairs (GWIA) have joined forces to organize a series of summer events. It is with great enthusiasm that we invite you to join us for a virtual game night and happy hour on July 8th to kick things off.
