9:00 - 10:30am: The Business Case for Sustainability and Positive Social Impact (Meghan Chapple)
Why in the world should a business leader get involved with sustainability? Companies can become more resilient in the face of climate change and contribute positively to a sustainable future. Sustainability is a field of study and practice to create a relationship with the Earth within the limits of the planet’s ecological systems that benefits all living beings. To move towards a more sustainable future where business can thrive, we need change in our structures and current relationship with one another and the planet.
In this session, we will face both the scientific and social truth of the situation. Only by acknowledging the situation with knowledge of the planetary limits, the social impacts, and economic models, can we begin to understand the current system and look to new solutions and business models. Students will learn a framework for creating value for the business, society, and the planet. They will also explore their role as change agents in creating sustainable businesses and a positive impact.
10:45am - 12:15pm: The Moral Case for Sustainability and Social Impact (Bill Novelli)
This lecture has two premises:
A business purpose incorporating environmental and social strategies is essential to create shareholder value and positive social impact in the world.
This requires moral and ethical behavior that comes from the top and woven into corporate culture.
Discussion will include: our ethical responsibilities to business and society; what motivates people to behave ethically and unethically; why ethical leadership is better leadership; the practices of ethical leaders.
12:15 - 1:30pm: The Geopolitics of Sustainability (Joel Hellman)
1:30 - 3:00pm: Economics of Sustainability and Business Models (Vishal Agrawal)
While the ideas behind the notion of “sustainable business” have been around for a while, this session will focus on the current definition of sustainability in the business context, especially in today’s competitive and rapidly changing global environment.
We will also focus on why a corporation should care about sustainability, and how such initiatives can improve financial performance as well. Through a variety of examples across industries, countries, and firms, we will learn a taxonomy for different potential mechanisms for incorporating or capitalizing on sustainability initiatives in a business strategy. You will also learn a simple framework for making the business case for a sustainability strategy
