Meet With Your Legislator

A legislator meeting is a 1:1 opportunity to discuss your perspective and ask for their support of specific nuclear energy policies or legislation. These meetings are often brief (15-20 min), so focused preparation is key.

How can meeting with your legislator make a difference?

• Directly Influence Policymakers 

  • Meeting face-to-face with legislators allows you to personally advocate for nuclear energy policies and discuss the issues in-depth. It's a powerful way to shape their views and priorities.

• Build Relationships 

  • Having a personal meeting helps establish you as a trusted source that legislators and their staff can turn to for information and perspective on nuclear energy issues.

• Provide Local Perspective

  •  As a constituent, you can demonstrate to legislators how support for nuclear energy impacts the local community in terms of jobs, economy, environment, and more.

The following training video will guide you through the legislative meeting process.  

To make the most of your meeting:

• Introduce yourself and build rapport

• Concisely explain the issue and your position

• Share a personal story demonstrating the local impact

• Discuss 2-3 key arguments in favor of your view

• Directly ask for their support of specific bills or policies

• Offer to be an ongoing resource on nuclear issues

• Express thanks and follow up with any requested information

How do you set it up?

• Find your legislator's contact info on the state website or a site like openstates.org.

• Send a polite, concise email introducing yourself and requesting a meeting to discuss nuclear energy.

• Once scheduled, prepare a focused agenda and practice your key points.

• At the meeting, address the legislator by title and name (e.g. Senator Johnson).

• Introduce yourself as a constituent and share your connection to nuclear advocacy.

• Clearly state the issue and the specific action you are asking them to take.

• Make your case using local examples, facts, and personal experiences.

• Welcome questions and provide succinct, confident responses.

• Be gracious and respectful throughout, even if they disagree with your position.

• Thank them for their time, offer to follow up, and send a note reinforcing your points.

After the meeting

Writing or calling your legislator is a lower effort and much lower impact way to get in touch with them. We highly recommend attempting to set up a meeting.  However, if you need something a little less involved, you may go this route.
