Week Twelve - November 18th 2021
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well.
I am delighted to let you know that GIS has been named Finalist in the SchoolsCompared Top Schools Awards, for Best International Baccalaureate School in the UAE 2021-22. As the organizer of the awards states, ‘It is an extraordinary achievement and says so much about what your school has, in turn, achieved for your students, and your contribution to the outstanding quality of education in the UAE.’ The overall winner of this category will be announced on December 6th, but to be one of the finalists is very pleasing indeed and reflects so positively on what our teachers, students and parents are doing to support GIS’ journey. I have said a little more in this short video clip:
Sport has taken a more prominent place again this week and more wins have been notched up by both girls’ and boys’ teams at several age groups. What made this all the more exciting was the announcement this week that spectators may attend matches! It has been lovely to chat with parents who have come to support, and I look forward to seeing you.
We have also thoroughly enjoyed the Primary School sports days. What well organized events across the three days – our students have loved it and we are very grateful to the whole PE team for their huge effort.
Finally, we are proud of our very own Mr. Vikas Singh, Head of Secondary Design & Arts, for being invited to be a ‘dragon’ as part of the the ‘Dragon’s Den’ competition organized by the British Education Suppliers’ Association, which included the 50+ British companies exhibiting within the UK Pavilion at Expo. As part of this Showcase, the UK start-ups had to present to a panel of experts. Mr. Vikas was invited as an expert judge, alongside Leisa Grace Wilson, Editorial Director of Teach Middle East and Andrew Turner, Group Head of Education Technology, at Aldar Academies. Thank you Mr. Vikas for representing GIS so well.

A note from the Doctors Office
Dear Parents,
As we head towards winter, an increased incidence of Seasonal Influenza virus is being reported in the region.
I would like to encourage our GIS families to get the flu shot. The Influenza vaccine is available at all DHA primary health care centers in Dubai.
Please click HERE to find the Seasonal Influenza brochures in English and HERE for the Arabic version, for complete information.

Dr. Sanam Shaikh

Join the GIS STEPPI team.
GIS has accepted the Dubai Fitness Challenge and will be competing with other schools in the STEPPI CHALLENGE. Join our team by downloading the STEPPI app and contributing towards GIS being the fittest school in Dubai.
Throughout the Dubai Fitness Challenge we will be running fitness sessions every morning for grade 2 and above from 07:30-08:00 in the Indoor Sports Hall until November 25th. PE Staff and some of the Gr 11 & 12 students will be leading a wide range of activities including yoga, flexibility training, dodgeball and many more.
As well as this we will reintroduce the daily mile where students can run, walk or jog around the Main Football Field between 07:30-08:00. We will play some music and students can enjoy some exercise with friends and siblings.
All of these activities will also be a part of the GIS Fittest House Competition. Students will be able to earn points for attending these activities and can earn more points for extra effort, enthusiasm and encouragement to others.
We will also be running some family fitness challenges where families can get involved together at home and earn house points so keep an eye on our social media platforms.
ARE YOU UP TO THE CHALLENGE?
Frankie and his tree friends, Karen and Myk, are in desperate need of some festive decorations!
Please make or dig up some old decorations in UAE colours (Black, White, Red and Green) and hang it on your favorite tree before the 1st of December.
