Week Twelve - November 18th 2021
The sense of anticipation was contagious this week as our Grade 11 students waited excitedly for their new Senior Jackets. What struck me throughout the week however, was the wide range of flags embroidered onto the sleeves of the jackets. We all know that GIS is gifted with 90 different nationalities. However, the visual kaleidoscope I was greeted with each time a group of senior students walked past, not only deepened my appreciation for our diverse community, but also had me thinking of the cultural exchanges taking place each day. The subtle and not so subtle misunderstandings, so often seen in our wider world, being naturally addressed through open dialogue and proximity.
Those of us working at GIS are so fortunate to be exposed to the wonder and awe that sweeps students when they realize that a custom or tradition they are familiar with, is not the same for their classmates. Or, the surprise when they find out that their assumption of something being different, proves not to be the case. This is what an international education is about, showing that ‘other people, with their differences, can also be right’ (ibo).
Admitting that an other’s opinion is correct can be a difficult thing to do, especially for young people. It is our role, as the significant adults in their lives, to guide and support them in standing up for what is right; to embrace, value and respect!
Though, this is a tricky minefield to navigate. What is right for one, may be deemed wrong by another. Sometimes, young people put what they consider to be a right above what is right. One’s rights should align with what is ‘right’, not override it. At times the mind of a growing teen, clouded with hormones, struggles to see this clearly. Poor choices are made which creates tension and causes hurt.
Ensuring that members of our community continue to embrace diversity and feel safe to express their opinions, is so important here at GIS. Our community is one where trust and respect is at the forefront of all that we do. Therefore, look out in coming weeks for a new initiative which builds upon this; an initiative that continues to prepare young people to enter the working world, capable of embracing differences, valuing different perspectives and appreciating that ‘other people, with their differences, can also be right’. This week, grade 6 students have started with order of operations. They had a selection of activities to choose from to practice this new skill. Some preferred the cross-number puzzles, some preferred mazes and others chose to do the color-in activity. They were all having fun while working on a challenging level.
Grade 7 students practiced their geometry skills by completing scavenger hunts. Some chose to revise measurement conversions, some chose to move on to calculating perimeter, and some were given a challenge solving perimeter and area problems involving the Theorem of Pythagoras and the area of trapezoids, 2 topics that they were not exposed to yet. All students involved in the scavenger hunts were fully on task while also developing their research skills.
Grade 11 students are studying the topic “Customs and Traditions”, which belongs to the theme “Experiences”. During our lesson, they made an oral presentation in Spanish with visual support about a tradition of their country of origin. Students presented to the class different celebrations/ traditions/festivals from India, Lebanon, Finland, Morocco and Canada.
Grade 6 students have been engaged in many hands-on activities while learning about cells this week. They prepared samples of animal and plant cells and observed them under the microscope. They also learned about some examples of specialized cells through a scavenger hunt activity.
Students are working on sublimation print technology. The topic of the unit is UAE Souvenir, to celebrate 50th National Day. In this project they explored the importance of Souvenir, analysed different Souvenirs, and wrote design specifications for their Design. Year 6 will be using sublimation printing on MUG and YR 7 will be using sublimation printing on fabric.
Our Grade Level WhatsApp Groups offer parents another means to remain informed key events and developments in the secondary school.
