Week Ten- November 4th 2021
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well.
Flag Day at GIS was a gloriously colourful display of students dressed in red, green, white or black, or all four! This year, the special fiftieth anniversary for the UAE, we decided to link up with our neighbouring schools, WEK and NMS, to produce a video encapsulating the joy of the day and also illustrate the strong bonds between our GEMS schools. The GIS section of the video shows a human flag composed of secondary school students and the number 50 embodied by our primary school children. The students were so well behaved and I would like to thank them all for their massive contribution to making this such a successful event. Thank you to Mr. Sujay and Mr. Vikas who organized the drone cameras. The full video will be available soon - HERE is a draft version for you to enjoy.
At 11am on Wednesday 3rd November, our oldest Emirati student, Mohammed Abdulsalam (G12) and our youngest Alia Alhawai, raised the flag to the sound of the UAE National Anthem. It was a poignant moment and we thank our students for representing the school so well.
I was also proud to represent GIS this week, at a French Business Council gathering at the Dubai Expo, which included a speech from the Vice Consul. Those I met had many questions about GIS, GEMS and the IB, and I made some valuable connections for the school.
GIS teachers have been furthering their knowledge and skills and sharing best practice again this week. I was so impressed to see, during a Tuesday professional learning session, a ‘Teachers Teaching Teachers’ session. It is commendable that our staff work together in this way. The very best schools have high levels of teacher teamwork and collaboration. Next week the GEMS group are deep diving into Arabic and our Arabic teachers are participating with enthusiasm.
Finally, the week finished with another celebration, Diwali, the festival of light and love. Our parent Ms Renu taught me the true meaning of Diwali - ‘row of lights’ to light the way and, appropriately for a school, ‘knowledge over ignorance’. Ms Renu and her team of helpers have certainly lit up the entrances to GIS, with balloons, flowers and decorations, and we are grateful to them for their hard work.
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
Simon Herbert
We are delighted to say that it has been a busy week of Extra Curricular activities at GIS. Students have been deprived of these extra learning opportunities for a long time, so we are delighted to be able to offer our teacher led activities once again.
Term 1 DASSA fixtures kick off next week. Our squads have been training very hard over the past few weeks and a huge thanks must go to all our coaches and student coaches, who have worked hard to get all squads prepared. We have 10 squads competing in both football and basketball and we wish all teams the very best of luck in their respective competitions #GoJaguars

Throughout the Dubai Fitness Challenge we will be running fitness sessions every morning for grade 2 and above from 07:30-08:00 in the Indoor Sports Hall until November 25th. PE Staff and some of the Gr 11 & 12 students will be leading a wide range of activities including yoga, flexibility training, dodgeball and many more.
As well as this we will reintroduce the daily mile where students can run, walk or jog around the Main Football Field between 07:30-08:00. We will play some music and students can enjoy some exercise with friends and siblings.
All of these activities will also be a part of the GIS Fittest House Competition. Students will be able to earn points for attending these activities and can earn more points for extra effort, enthusiasm and encouragement to others.
We will also be running some family fitness challenges where families can get involved together at home and earn house points so keep an eye on our social media platforms.
