Week Ten- November 4th 2021
Dear Primary School Parents,
Well, it has certainly been an exciting week! We have celebrated the flag of our community (UAE) with a collaborative activity across all three schools. Our Emirati students took an active role on Wednesday to raise our school flag with pride at 11am. Thursday our parent community decorated the school and provided entertainment through drumming and dancing before school. Students and staff showed support for our Indian community by dressing in traditional or colorful clothing. Happy Diwali to all those who celebrate!!
Classroom visits this week have really highlighted for me the level of engagement our students have in their learning. A small group session on phonological awareness, a KG2 inquiry into communities, a grade 3 inquiry into biomes (followed up with an Expos visit) and an Arabic lesson on opinions and evidence all highlighted our students as active learners. Engagement is much more than a "fun" lesson activity. Our students of all ages are stretching their thinking through challenging objectives and collaborative discussions. Learning is well under way at GIS this year and the excitement across the grades is a reminder of this important work!!!
We look forward to a successful month of learning in November.

Central Idea: Products undergo many processes and journeys in order to meet the needs of consumers.
Grade 2 spent this week making some very cool stuff: slime and butter! A part of their unit of inquiry asks them to explore how products are made. Some classes assumed the role of scientist trying to create gooey slime and others assumed the role of a chef trying to create yummy butter. Everyone was engaged, challenged and learning about products relevant to their life. It was a opportunity to get back into the lab and learn in a different space as well. And it was a lot of fun! Please ask your child about this exciting learning experience.
Any students requiring remote learning access must contact the Primary office to initiate access. The conditions shared have been:
A student has a medical condition which prevents them from accessing face-to-face learning. In this case, the student must provide a medical certificate from Dubai Health Authority, stating the reason they cannot attend school. I understand this is challenging to get with strict criteria.
A student is outside of the UAE and is unable to return due to international Covid restrictions. In this case, the student must provide a certificate from the relevant government authority as applicable and in advance.
A student has tested positive for Covid-19 or has been identified as a close contact of someone with Covid-19. In this case, the student must have the appropriate certificate from Dubai Health Authority.
Email your child's homeroom teacher before 8am so that he / she can mark their absence as excused.
Complete an absence form for more than 2 days and submit to homeroom teacher on the child's first day back at school after absence.
Absence for more than 3 days requires doctors clearance (in some cases a medical certificate is requested )
Email the gis_primaryleaverequests@gemsedu.com and your child's homeroom teacher 48 hours in advance to ensure your child and their leave slip are prepared in advance.
At the time of collection, please come to the Primary Reception at Gate 4.
