Week Ten- November 4th 2021
What a wonderful week to be a part of the GIS community!
Well done to all students who got into the spooky spirit when they dressed up at the start of this week. I would like to especially commend our senior students who are really getting behind such initiatives. They may not realize it, but they are helping to develop further the positive culture of the school in establishing traditions and establishing worthy legacies. Timmy the Mascot is one such example of positive school spirit that is being generated in a subtle way. Timmy, who loves having his photo taken, is becoming a regular feature on the Third Floor!
Secondary Students did us proud when they took to the football pitch in an orderly and coordinated manner on Wednesday to form the UAE Flag to commemorate Flag Day. Students did very well to sit on the pitch in the heat waiting to do a ‘Mexican wave’ while a drone recorded overhead. A highlight was the sense of pride that was evident from the students. The video will be released shortly to the community - it is a must see!
We also wish a Happy Diwali to our community. While the main celebrations take place today, Secondary Staff were treated to a Diwali lunch on Tuesday afternoon. Not only was the food delicious, but having the chance to sit and chat with colleagues in such a warm and welcoming environment was priceless. We are deeply grateful to our valued staff who supplied and served the lunch to us.
In amongst these celebrations, student groups have continued to visit the Expo. They have told me that they have enjoyed it a lot, especially visiting the various pavilions.
We were also fortunate this week to be presented with a small number of free tickets to attend the Men’s T20 World Cup. Mr Kieran and other PE staff were more than happy to take a group of G9 to 12 students along to watch New Zealand defeat Scotland (sorry Mr Herbert!) We are delighted to be able to offer such opportunities to our students again.
Finally, you will soon receive your child’s Progress Report. Those of you with children in the MYP, we would like to emphasis that assessment in the MYP is an accumulative process, whereby four criteria are regularly assessed throughout the year. At this stage of the year, not all criteria have been formally assessed. Where this is the case N/A will appear. There are also no grades included on these reports for this reason. The information that is most valuable to parents is the Engagement in Class and Commitment to Learning. The appraisal of your child’s performance in these two categories is far more important at this stage of the year. Your child’s level of engagement and commitment to their education has a direct correlation to their academic success. However, should you have any queries regarding your child’s progress, please do not hesitate to contact the relevant teacher.
Progress reports can be accessed via GEMS Connect > Academics > Assessment Reports

On Wednesday 10th November, we will welcome a prevention specialist from Prevention Solutions within the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundationfrom the FCD.
The prevention specialist will present the most up-to-date information available on the physiological and psychological effects of various drugs, and provide a forum for discussing social, cultural, and personal issues that relate to the choices people make.
One thing that makes Prevention Solutions unique is that all of the prevention specialists are in healthy recovery from their own alcohol or other drug addictions. Most prevention specialists began their own drinking and drug use during middle school and high school. They have experienced the pressures, personal issues, and social situations teens face with regard to alcohol and other drug use. They also have first-hand knowledge of the destructive aspects of drug use, and how, in their case, occasional use led to addiction.
Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation believes in involving the whole school community in prevention education, not just students.
FINAL CALL
It has been noted that a considerable amount of students are yet to sign up for any of the Week Without Walls activities. This has a huge effect on the planning of the week, as we need to know staffing for each activity.
The deadline for international trips has already passed, as flights have already been booked but we have extended the deadline of local trips until Nov 11th.
If you have not already done so please navigate the Week Without Walls website and sign up for your trip of choice. The 20% deposit payment can be made through the Gems Connect App or the Gems Oasis website.

STARS OF THE WEEK
Fathalla, Haluk, Jose, Yara, Rehan and Omar
Our Jaguars had a busy week with the return of the DASSA league. We had 7 fixtures in both basketball and football, with some great performances and results. Please find results, match reports, photos, future fixtures and more on our Sports Website.
In grade 6 students successfully investigated different representatives of a data set. We were discussing the mean, the median and the mode of a data set, different types of graphs to present the data set appropriately. To successfully monitor their progress and to combine different IB learner Profiles all grade 6 students participated in a scavenger hunt and its needless to say this was really funny for everyone and we are happy to share that some students even took the role of an “assistant teacher” to help their friends understand better. What a great experience!
As Q1 comes to an end, this also marks the end of phase 1 of Grade 10's first unit: Before & After: Forces in Nature. Over the last 9 weeks, grade 10 Visual Arts students have worked for over 10 hours in class developing the skill of drawing with proportional measurement. In addition, they’ve experimented with mark-making techniques to add depth to their 2D works through application of value. Students were expected to track their process for self-assessment through each step and will continue to do so into Phase 2 of this unit. Below are some examples of student progress made from week 1 through week 10. Stay tuned for updates in the coming weeks as this unit continues to unfold!
Our Grade Level WhatsApp Groups offer parents another means to remain informed key events and developments in the secondary school. Parents can join the relevant groups by scanning the QR codes below. While we have a temporary admin for the Grade 8 WhatsApp group, we are seeking a permanent replacement.
