Week Eight - October 28th 2020
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well and enjoyed the midterm break. This week is a shortened one but the GIS students and teachers have certainly filled each of the four days! We also had another visit from KHDA to ensure our students and staff are adhering to the highest standards of health and safety measures. This visit went extremely well and our visitor had no comments, other than to ask that we carry on being scrupulous.
The week began with an extraordinary virtual gathering of students for the Schools’ Conference of Parties Exposition (SCOPE) 2020. Organized by Ms. Asha Alexander and her team from GEMS Kindergarten Starters, this event encompassed art, debate, and story writing skills, all on the important subject of climate change. Our students were ably led by Ms. Mariona, and guided by Ms. Malin, Ms. Jaclin and Ms. Rose. The GIS contributions were sensitively produced, astute and thoughtful and our students even gained first prize in the country representation section. All the students deserve praise, so well done to Abdallah A, Sarah A, Taleen A, Tara H, Zoya K, Malavika R, Esha D, and Divyanshi K.
Student leadership and opportunities at GIS are highly regarded and it was my pleasure to attend two key events which exemplified this. Firstly, during the midterm break, I enjoyed Mr. Lee’s leadership training of our secondary student leaders, which drew on best practice and the latest research to prompt our students into some excellent critical thinking around the subject. Secondly, my visit to Ms. Janice’s Primary School Council meeting was a wonderful chance to see our younger students putting some mature thinking into the planning of school events, in particular the Creepy Crawly Day!
Finally, and importantly, I would like to thank Ms. Nomah from our Islamic department, Ms. Noor, our Government Relations Executive, and GISPA for their contributions to the videos in honour of the Prophet’s Birthday. We hope that families will gain insight into an important day for our Muslim Community and of course that you all enjoy the day tomorrow.
I wish you a safe, restful and happy long weekend.
Kind Regards,
Simon Herbert
