Week Eight - October 28th 2020
I hope that the mid-term break gave families some time together and students the chance to recharge their batteries. It was a great time of reflection for me as well as an opportunity for me to spend time with some groups of students for leadership training, ambassador training and some additional work with a core group that are working on a project with me so thank you to those students that spent some of their break in school with me for those days (you were brilliant company!)
I also reflected on the false sense of normality that has begun to develop. We must remember that we are operating during a global crisis and that this is not normal. We cannot work in the same way as we have and we have to consider this in regard to the expectations that we place on ourselves. I spoke to many students this week about their anxieties about work and their modes of working. I reminded them that they are "making it work" and that they have to give themselves credit for this rather than worrying about what they cannot do.
I have also spoken to teachers and middle leaders about this. Teachers are doing an immense job of mitigating the situation that we are in. We thrive on collaboration at GIS and this cannot happen in the same way that it has in the past. Our students are at their best when they are shoulder to shoulder working through a task; this isn't possible and we cannot stress ourselves about something that is out of our control. Our students can collaborate but not as they have known it in the past.
Our days are challenging and we have to give "down time" to students so that they can chat, interact and laugh with their friends. The distance that has to be honored between us all can lead us to feeling disconnected and can be challenging, so we have to allow more time for us to connect on a personal level and we have to nurture this every week. These things are important so we cannot stress about what we can no longer do but we can enjoy the things that we are permitted to do.
In these trying times, use of certain facilities has been restricted for our students. This has caused significant difficulties for our Science team and the DP2 students that have their Internal Assessments (IAs) to complete as a critical aspect of their programme. The IAs in all DP subjects make a contribution to a student's final DP grade but this varies from subject to subject.
In Science, students identify, plan, conduct and report on a lab investigation. The the middle two photographs below show some of our Chemistry students conducting their IAs this year. These have had to take place out of schools hours over a number of days due to COVID19 restrictions. The video that is linked below is a summary of one student's Chemistry work. We are extremely proud of the dedication and commitment shown by our DP science students to get their IAs completed. We also thank our wonderful Science teachers for giving their own time to supervise students out of school hours as they completed their IAs.
The DP science teachers prepare students for the completion of their IAs throughout the course, as well as covering the examination content obviously. The image on the bottom left shows a DP student conducting a lab to determine the relative atomic mass of an element from its isotopes using three methods. Whilst this is not a student developed lab, it still provides hands on experience that will serve them well when they begin to develop their own investigations for DP2.
This initiative is all about showcasing the various talents of GIS students. Are you a gymnast, musician, songwriter, freestyle footballer or basketball player, skateboarder, skier, magician, etc.?
If so, please record your talents and submit them to Ms. Anastassia or Mr. Barry, who will create and share a compilation of talents to showcase to the community.
If you have a talent, please share and celebrate it! The deadline for submissions is Saturday 14th November.
The wellbeing of your children is important and KHDA is working with schools to measure their wellbeing so that schools can take action to help them learn about their own wellbeing and improve it. When children add their voice to the Dubai Student Wellbeing Census, they become part of an initiative that will help them to succeed at school and in life.
Students in grades 6-12 will respond to a variety of wellbeing questions including happiness, relationships with friends and teachers and physical health.
In previous years, students participated in the Census online while at school. This year, many students will be taking the Census at home.
The census will take place at GIS during the week commencing November 15th. More information to follow.
There are so many things that we loved about this Tweet of the Week.
It was a Tweet by our (now) former Student Body President Hania
It shows as Taleen as she has now taken over the account (something that has become a tradition at GIS now)
Rana (the former Vice President) took the photo and is the student at the front of the image
It is a photograph from last year when social distancing wasn't a thing
The team in the background gave so much to the school in the term as the StuELT
It's a lovely message of thanks from a student leader to her team
I'm sure everyone in our community is as thankful for your service as we are and we are so excited to see what the new team achieve this year
Please can we remind families that they must make contact with the absence email address on days where their child is sick and staying home from school.
Any absence that is longer than 3 days requires a doctors certificate for this to be an authorised absence.
We please ask that parents remember to honor social distancing during pick up in the afternoons.
This is particularly important on Tuesday pick up as this is a busier period.
It is important that all adults in the lives of young people role model what we expect of them on a day to day basis.
Any of our Grade 6 - Grade 9 students that are interested in becoming a committee member can send their expressions of interest to the GEMS ISAK email address of any the Head and Deputy Head.
We look forward to seeing what this team (and their committees) can achieve over the next 12 months.
If in doubt contact Taleen (Student Body President) - taleen.a@gemsisak.com
or
Neila (Vice President) - neila.b@gemsisak.com
