Week Nine - November 1st, 2024
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well.
I am delighted to let you know that GIS was the host school for the GEMS IB Conference on Saturday 26th October. 300 educators from across the whole GEMS group came to share best practice and attend a variety of teacher-led workshops. This reflected IB ‘learning for life’ at its very best! My thanks to Ms Kim and GEMS IB Conference Committee for their amazing organization and to our Facilities and Operations staff for the preparations.
On the same morning, we also hosted a Sanskrit workshop, organized by Samskrita Bharati and attended by the Deputy Consul of India, Mr Shri. Ashish Kumar Verma.
Ms Tarryn informed me that Shaurya (G4) completed the first stage of the ChallengeME Maths Championship which consists of over 130 schools participating in weekly challenging quests. Shaurya received a gold certificate and was the top performer in his band, therefore invited to the second stage where he will complete against the other schools’ top performers. Well done Shaurya in reaching the finals and competing so impressively!
On Monday this week, our teachers and teaching assistants contributed enthusiastically to a professional development day. Sessions were focused on ‘outstanding teaching’ and I was so pleased with the input from our staff. Many teachers and leaders presented; I enjoyed delivering a workshop on what it means to be outstanding in speaking and listening, and how teachers can reduce their talk time!
It is not only the students and teachers who have been learning at GIS this week; our parents too have been studying the Middle Years Programme and finding out about the assessment processes. Thank you to Ms Sandy for organising this ConnectEd session.
Thursday saw an Autumn celebration, with some quite amazing costumes from staff and students, and even some parents!
My thanks to Ms Nomah Naeem and Mr Abdullah Ibrahim from our secondary Islamic Department for organizing a hugely successful Umrah trip to Saudi Arabia, during the October break. Ms Nomah informed me that, ‘Students visited the holy sites of Masjid al-Haram and Masjid e Nabwi, explored historical landmarks, and toured significant museums like the Hira Cultural District and the Seerah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).’ This journey highlighted the importance of Umrah for our Muslim students, achieving the primary goal of fostering real-life Islamic learning. The students' enthusiasm was evident, especially in the shared excitement of embarking on this holy journey with friends.
And finally, we enjoyed a wonderful Flag Day Ceremony at 11am on Friday. Our Emirati students and staff made us proud and our whole school community was extremely respectful of this important day in the UAE’s calendar.
Kind regards and have a good weekend,

The Country Ambassador program was launched in 2021 with the intention of helping connect families with their motherland tongue and country. Small community sub groups have been created to help integrate new families from these specific countries as they enroll at GIS. We encourage you to join your country group via the QR code.
Although as a whole, we are one big family, it’s always nice to connect with those from our country. Ultimately, the goal is to have at least ONE representative for each country.
If you see that your country or ambassador is not listed and you are interested in representing your country, please reach out to us via email at gispa@gemsisak.com
Our Iranian, Egyptian and Latino parents have already started to welcome returning and new parents on a nice breakfast gathering.
We encourage all GIS communities to get together and keep us posted.
