Week Thirty Five - June 26th, 2025
Dear Parents,
Firstly, I have some really exciting news (I’ll write to all parents with the inspection report next week) – we have been awarded Centre of Excellence status by the Inclusion Quality Mark team of external accreditors! This is a high accolade for the school and means we will now be a cluster lead for other schools (GEMS and non GEMS) to help them on their journey to diversity and inclusion. Parents are mentioned in the report, for your support of the culture of belonging at GIS. We have been informed that we are the only full programme IB school in the world to have this status. My thanks in particular to Hannah Kelly and her team, and to all staff, students and parents for helping to create such an amazing environment!
We are proud to have in our midst the winner of the EuroAsia Jiu-Jitsu Championship. Yassin E N (G9) won three gold medals, a remarkable haul which reflects his self-discipline and dedication to the sport. Well done Yassin!
This week we have seen the arts flourishing, thanks to Ms Emma and team, who have organised the celebration of the secondary school arts week. From theatrical performances, talent shows, to morning music and beautiful visual art and even a parade of ‘bobble heads’, we have been reminded just how creative our students are and just how holistic the education is here at GIS.
It was an honour this week to welcome parents and students to the Grade 10 Completion Ceremony. We are very proud of all that these Grade 10 students have achieved so far and delighted that so many students will remain with us for their crucial IBDP or IBCP years.
I would like to wish our talented First Lego League Team the very best as they enter the finals of the FLL Championship in Australia. This competition sets challenges in research, robotics and innovation and our team has already excelled in the regional event, to be one of only three GEMS schools to pass to the internatiuonal finals. Ms Amanda and I were treated to a glimpse of the full presentation by the team on Thursday. The Project ‘Hemaya’ (protection in Arabic) aims to convince the judges of the need to use sustainable engineering when mining the sea bed. The team have created a mining tool for this, have costed it and have researched all perspectives - they deserve to do very well and I can’t wait to hear the results from Australia!
More entrepreneurship was on show on Thursday, as the Grade 8s held an exhibition of their ideas at their Innovation Challenge. I saw wellbeing apps, electronic ways to record of basketball shots on one’s watch, and powerful presentations on gender equality and race awareness. It is so exciting to see Grade 8s produce such mature work. Well done to all and my thanks in particular to our our Grade 10 student organiser, Ved N, along with Ms Sandy and Ms Marie-Claire.
Finally, I would like to let you know of a change to our ELT team for next year. Ms Sarah has decided to leave GEMS after 14 successful years. We thank her for her superb work for GIS students and families. Sarah will become the Head of Primary for another Dubai school and will stay in close touch with us. It is also my pleasure to let you know that our Ms Hannah Kelly, will join our ELT team next year as Director of Inclusion and Accreditations (and remains our Designated Safeguarding Lead). This well deserved promotion indicates to all just what a crucial role safeguarding and inclusion has in the life of our school.
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
Have you outgrown your school uniforms? If so, we’re now accepting donations of pre-loved uniforms. It’s a great way to recycle and give your uniforms a second life!
The Country Ambassador program was launched in 2021 with the intention of helping connect families with their motherland tongue and country. Small community sub groups have been created to help integrate new families from these specific countries as they enroll at GIS. We encourage you to join your country group via the QR code.
Although as a whole, we are one big family, it’s always nice to connect with those from our country. Ultimately, the goal is to have at least ONE representative for each country.
If you see that your country or ambassador is not listed and you are interested in representing your country, please reach out to us via email at gispa@gemsisak.com
Our Iranian, Egyptian and Latino parents have already started to welcome returning and new parents on a nice breakfast gathering.
We encourage all GIS communities to get together and keep us posted.
GIS house color t-shirts and swim wear will be available to purchase from threads.
