Week Thirty One - May 12th, 2023
Dear Parents & Guardians,
This week I would like to commend our staff and students for the excellent work being done across the school. We have a number of students who are actively engaging in projects that are helping to make our community a better place. These initiatives are very diverse and always initiated by our students. Some projects currently underway are Daniela and Anastasia (G11) are volunteering in an animal shelter and collecting donations for the animals. Feel free to drop off your donations to school to assist this project.
Dev (G10) is about to embark on ‘The Well-Being Project’ where he plans to arrange tours of Dubai for support staff. Dev has uncovered that many support staff, who have lived in Dubai for a long time, have never visited the ’Dubai attractions’. So he is working with key sightseeing spots and STS, to organize day trips for support staff. He is looking for volunteers from Grades 9 & 10 to join this excellent project. Keep a look out for the posters around school.
Another outstanding initiative is The Toolbox. Krishna and Suhani (G10) have been leading The Toolbox since the start of the year, where they have organized guest speakers from the crypto industry and architecture. In recent weeks however, they have been consulting with Upstrive (our social emotional platform) who are very interested in working in collaboration with them to develop their financial literacy syllabus. What an amazing achievement!
Further highlights this week were on the sports field. Congratulations to our U14 Basketballers who had a great win against Gems First Point this week. Excellent work Mr Keith and team. Our U19 badminton squad also secured second place in the DASSA championship; with Raghavendra and Sanjna winning the mixed doubles and Aliakbar and Harsh winning the boys doubles. And, big congratulations to our U15 cricket squad who won the league, going unbeaten in the tournament.
Finally, this week, I would like to thank and congratulate our fantastic staff. As you may know, CIS were in school all week conducting their 5 year review. The feedback received was extremely positive. All visitors were very impressed with our facilities and the effort of our staff. I would like to thank everyone for the work that has gone into preparing for this week. Well done!
PLEASE NOTE: Lockdown drill taking place on May 19th. Please speak to your son/daughter in preparation for this.
Best wishes
Amanda Murphy

Last year, the amazing Student ELT launched the Secondary Student Hub for secondary students. This is an ongoing collaborative project between the Student ELT, Inclusion Team & Grade Leaders.
The Secondary Student Hub will remain the students access point for the new social groups and peer mentoring, as well as signing up for the already established peer tutoring programme.
Students will also be able to find links to ECAs, student voice initiative, counsellor referral forms, mindset matters and homeroom information. We are really proud of the work that the Student ELT have put in to this so far and look forward to seeing their expansion of the site.
*Students must be logged into their gemsisak gmail account to access the site.

Grade 11
Did you know wearing a dark T-shirt on a sunny day makes you feel warmer than when wearing a light T-shirt? Grade 11 Biology students have been applying this knowledge in the process of photosynthesis, where plants absorb light energy to synthesize chemicals like sugar and starches. They conducted an experiment, testing the pigments present in a leaf and the wavelengths they absorb. They tested purple and green spinach and used a spectrometer to view the absorption of energy and found that both types of spinach contain Chlorophyll A and B.
Grades 6-10
This Saturday, students from GIS will join with students from GEMS Wellington Al Khail and WSO to perform at the Wellington Showcase. These students have been practicing over the last 3 weeks to prepare the music from The Greatest Showman as our contribution to the Showcase. This is a great opportunity for our students to join with other GEMS students to put on a great performance.
Everyone is welcome to come join us at GEMS Wellington Silicon Oasis at 2:30pm this Saturday.
Grade 9
Grade 9s completed their summative assessment entirely online adhering perfectly to all assessment protocols. Well done to all students!

Al Lu’lu wal Marjan اللؤلؤ والمرجان- The Pearls and the Coral
The 5th Interschool Arabic-Islamic Festival, Al Lu’lu wal Marjan in GEMS Millenium School.
Competition is a situation in which someone is trying to win something or be more successful than someone else:However a Quran competition is unique as the participant is always a winner and a star. GIS students Rayan Hasan and Chahine Ouchari participated in the competition and made us all proud.
We are pleased to announce the launch of "GIS Speaks" in Arabic, YouTube episodes from Gems International School (GIS) that highlight the most important events happening in our school, introduced by Secondary students in Arabic. You can find the link here.
The episodes will be broadcasted fortnightly and will feature updates on the latest happenings in the school, including academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and important announcements. By tuning in, you will get an inside look at what's happening in our school and stay up to date with everything that's going on.
In addition, the program will also feature video footage from classrooms to give parents a better understanding of what is happening in the Arabic department. This will allow you to see firsthand the progress that your children are making and get a sense of their learning environment.
We would also like to invite you to participate in "As the Proverb Says," a new segment in the program where we will be featuring a different Emirati proverb each episode. Leave a comment with your interpretation of the proverb, and you will have the chance to win a prize. We value your input and look forward to hearing from you!
We are excited to have your children participate in "GIS Speaks" in Arabic and encourage you to watch alongside them. We hope that you find the program informative and engaging.
Grade 6
Grade 6 students worked collaboratively to demonstrate their understanding of the text by using the 5Ws,1H strategy forming questions about the text and answering those questions.
Grade 7
Grade 7 students worked collaboratively to demonstrate their understanding of the text by using the 5Ws,1H strategy forming questions about the text and answering those questions.
Grade 8
Grade 8 students worked collaboratively on a picture-based task using the 'Descriptive Bubbles' technique. Through this activity, they enhanced their speaking skills by sharing their ideas with their classmates. They were also expected to answer questions related to 'School life' using the present, past, and future tenses. It has been a great opportunity for them to practice their language skills and learn from each other.
Grade 6
This week, our grade 6 students started with a new unit on Data Management. In this unit, students will learn how to collect, classify and represent information that is gathered from a variety of sources as they explore the global context of identities and relationships. In some classes, students took turns, rotating per group, to choose which type of data representation their group would like to work on.
Grade 7
This week, our grade 7 students were investigating rates of change, determining if the rates of change in different scenarios are constant or not. Some students were working on their ‘puppy project’, using given data to determine what the mass of each of their puppies were at birth. Some students worked online (EP), completing tables and graphs involving rates of change. A few students were doing coloring-in activities: their answers determined which color they should use.
Grade 6 and 8
We have started the last round of the 6-week Lexonik Advance programme for the year. This programme is offered to selected students in grade 6 and 8. Through this programme, students rapidly improve reading, spelling, vocabulary and comprehension, with average reading age gains of 27 months in just six weekly one-hour sessions. Looking forward to seeing which group can read 74 syllables in 60 seconds!
Homeroom begins at 8:10am, following the UAE national anthem.
students are considered late if they arrive to class after the anthem.
Monday to Thursday: 3:15pm
Friday: 11:40am

Digital devices, such as smartphones and tablets, make online platforms and content easily accessible. And, while there are many benefits of seamless accessibility and connectivity, there are also many potential risks - to the health, well-being and even the safety of young people - that must be considered by young people themselves, as well as by parents and schools. Technological advances are faster than ever and new online platforms are released at a rapid rate, making it challenging to effectively monitor and control (for their own well-being) the online activity of the young people in our care.
Young people will, at times, seek out and/or be inadvertently exposed to inappropriate online content. If and when this is the case, it is important that they feel comfortable and confident to disclose and discuss the matter with trusted adults. While banning smart devices may not be practical (or desirable), implementing agreements around device usage (for instance) is a healthy and productive approach to online media balance and safety. There are a number of useful tips and strategies available to support healthy and well-informed approaches to media use. Please take some time to explore the E-safety: Parent Guidance, which has been created to support GIS parents in this regard.
