Week Thirty One - May 12th, 2023
Kim Conlin
Head of Primary
Dear PYP Parents,
Today wraps up our second week in May! We had a successful visit from Council of International Schools. We will receive our report for this 5 year review at the beginning of next academic year. A big thank-you to all students, parents and students who contributed to this review. More information is given in the whole school section. p
This coming Thursday 18th is not a regular school day for primary students since we will be hosting student led conferences (SLC). There will be no bus service for primary students this day. Families can sign up for a conference slot through the link found here: https://ptcfast.com/schools/GEMS_International_School_PYP. During the parents and students should come together to the conference, where students will lead their parents through their learning. More information can be found here. An important point to note: No teachers will be available for SLCs from 1pm-2:30pm.
Please also be informed that Friday May 19th the entire school will practice a lockdown drill. This drill allows us to rehearse the steps for the unlikely event in which it would be safer for students and staff to stay indoors. As part of this drill, students are asked to be out of line of sight from the hallways and to remain quiet in the class with their teacher. We reassure students that they are safe and its is simply a practice for everyone.
Thank-you for supporting our healthy food campaign. This week we had a guest speaker (nutritionist from Slices) meet with student leaders to deepen our understanding of reducing food waste. We look forward to student action in the coming weeks.
Excitement is beginning to build toward the arts week at the end of this month. Please take note of concert dates below.
Have a great weekend,
Head of Primary, GIS

This week we are peeking into how students in Early Years learn mathematical skills and concepts. Students begin learning from Pre k. Mathematical learning can be taught through play and through explicit teaching of concepts or skills. Students use a range of experiences, tools and manipulatives in math to help develop their skills and concepts while applying their mathematical understanding. Teachers look for opportunities to teach math through students play, counting objects, naming shapes, making patterns, sorting objects, adding groups of objects together and comparing sizes. Students are exposed to numbers in the environment and look for real life application. As students move up through the grade levels their learning becomes more explicit but they continue to use different manipulatives and apply their understanding to real world experiences.
Their recognition of number increases, they begin to develop an understanding of place value. Addition and subtraction begins from the early development of putting groups of objects together and taking them away, knowing what is 1 more and 1 less than a given number, and recognizing the symbols used for number sentences, before students begin to explore adding and subtracting larger numbers larger numbers. The concept of shape is developed through recognizing shapes in the environment, naming shapes, manipulating shapes and exploring the features shapes, in order for students to develop their ability to describe shape properties. Measurement is applied to real life experiences, comparing, and using non standard measurements. Sorting objects through play is the beginning development of data handling. Students eventually explore different ways to record their data and analyse their data. Below you will see some examples of mathematical learning in our Prek-Gr1 classes.
Parents PK-G1 drop/pick up in classroom (through gate 4,6,8)
Grade 2-5 drop/pick up either gate 4 or gate 8
Late/Tardy: any student arriving after the national anthem must get a late slip at front reception/gate 4
Email your child's homeroom teacher before 8am so that he / she can mark their absence as excused.
Complete an absence form for an absence of more than 2 days and submit to PYP office or homeroom teacher on the child's first day back.
Absence for more than 3 days requires prior approval if planned or a doctors clearance for illness related leave (in some cases a medical certificate is requested )
Email the gis_primaryleaverequest@gemsedu.com and your child's homeroom teacher 24 hours in advance to ensure your child and their leave slip are prepared in advance.
At the time of collection, please come to the Primary Reception at Gate 4.
