ISSUE 12: Balancing Technology for Wellbeing
Technology has become an integral part of our daily lives which influences how we connect, learn, and even unwind. As we navigate this digital landscape, it's crucial to consider the impact of technology on our overall wellbeing and the wellbeing of our students. It is important to strike a delicate balance between our screen time habits and our mental health.
Recent studies, such as those conducted by Twenge and Campbell (2018), emphasize the potential consequences of excessive screen time. From heightened stress levels to disturbances in sleep patterns, our constant interaction with screens can significantly impact our mental and emotional equilibrium. Acknowledging these challenges is the first step toward fostering a healthier relationship with technology.
At GIS, we recognize the need to provide guidance on establishing mindful technology practices and, as such, are actively taking opportunities to explore this topic during designated Advisory sessions. Drawing insights from Primack et al. (2017), we understand that setting clear guidelines and boundaries around screen time is essential. By encouraging a balanced approach, we aim to empower our students to leverage the benefits of technology while mitigating potential drawbacks.
However, it's essential to view technology not just as a challenge but as an opportunity. The research of Przybylski and Weinstein (2017) sheds light on the positive aspects of technology, showcasing its potential for fostering positive social connections and enhancing learning experiences. Through thoughtfully integrated technology use in our classrooms, we strive to create an environment that promotes both academic growth and social development.
Our commitment at GIS is not only to equip our students with the knowledge and skills needed for the future but also to nurture their overall wellbeing. By fostering a healthy relationship with technology, we aim to ensure that our students thrive academically, emotionally, and socially.
