We're thrilled to announce an exciting addition to our newsletter: a new column featuring insights from our students in the Gems International School (GIS). Authored by the students themselves, this column will spotlight their leadership initiatives aimed at fostering global citizenship, international mindedness, and intercultural competencies within our school community. These self-initiated activities exemplify the spirit of student agency, showcasing how our students actively engage in shaping a diverse and inclusive environment. Stay tuned to learn more about the impactful contributions our students are making to our shared journey towards global understanding and cooperation.
Charity Focus
This morning G5 student council visited the Al Jalila foundation to present a cheque of the amount collected from the recent Friendship Day bracelet sale. We were able to see the amazing facility at Al Jalila children’s hospital before visiting representatives from the Al Jalila Foundation. It was a great experience to see where the collected money is going and gave us the desire to continue to build the relationship between GIS and Al Jalila.

Our weekly focus for the next 4 weeks will be on the IB's Approaches to Learning, so you are able to see what these skills can look like in the classroom at different levels. This week, we look at how research skills are embedded in our learning. Students develop their research skills from our youngest students in Pre K all the way up through through high school. Research skills include information literacy where students learn to formulate questions, plan how they are going to find out the information, gather their data, record their findings and then synthesize, interpret, and evaluate their information before communicating what they found out in different ways. Research skills also includes media literacy where students learn how to use different forms of media, information and create their own ideas through different media. The final aspect of research skills is ethical use of media/ information, where students develop an understanding and apply this to their use of technology both socially and ethically.
This week our PreK students have been using their research skills to inquire into the different spaces around our school. They have asked questions, observed closely ,looking for different elements and shared their findings through making models, drawings, mark making and conversations.
In KG1 students have been using different books, looking at real life objects or living things and photographs to find out about different living things. They recorded their ideas through drawing and emergent writing. It provoked them to ask questions to further their understanding about living things. They used their research to help them to decide if different things were living or non living.
Our KG2 learners have been inquiring into how objects move using push and pull forces. They visited the Innovation Hub to observe different ways objects move and ask questions about what they noticed about the push and pull forces used.
In Grade 2 students are currently learning about simple machines. They explored various different simple machines at the Innovation Hub and discussed how they could work using the scientific vocabulary they have been developing as part of their inquiry.
SAVE THE DATES for our future Connect Eds
The purpose of the Connect Eds is to support our parent community with information related to social, emotional, and academics for their children.
We have a plethora of knowledge and expertise in our Primary School Team, and they will provide practical information and strategies.
The parent community is an integral part of GIS, and we feel it is essential to make them part of our learning community.
We hope to see many of you at the Connect Eds, and closer to the time, we will send you more information on the ConnectEds in our Newsletter for times, locations and the facilitators.
Parents have all received a notification to sign up for the Toddle platform. This is an exciting enhancement to our parent communication, and this year you will receive weekly updates through the Toddle platform.
This IB affiliated platform will offer opportunities for parents to remain up to date with their child's academic progress.
The below class pages will host resources for parents and will no longer have weekly messages. All information will be sent through Toddle, so please inform your class teacher if you have any trouble registering.
