Week Eighteen - January 31st, 2025
Grades 6-12
Ensuring Additional Support for All Students.
This academic year we are launching a new support initiative for all students at GIS. Academic Priority is a system of academic support for students that they can access in addition to their regular classes across all departments.
Each department holds a session once a week. The exact timings and locations for each department can be found on the Academic Priority Schedule posted below. This is also available on ManageBac.
Academic priority is staffed by teachers from the departments, ensuring that students have access to the teachers they need. Any student who needs additional support, has a question or just wants to discuss a particular topic is welcome at Academic Priority. There are no fixyed topics for a session. The teacher will provide support based on the individual student’s needs on a particular day.
In addition, teachers make themselves available to any student who needs support whenever possible. We are looking forward to the impact Academic Priority will have on our students progress and attainment.
Please see below for the Term 2 schedule.
Grade 12
Students in DP2 Biology recently engaged in a heart dissection activity to deepen their understanding of the heart’s anatomical structure and its adaptation to the circulatory system. The lesson began with a Theory of Knowledge (TOK) discussion, exploring the ethical question: How do ethical considerations affect the way that knowledge is produced and used? Students debated, To dissect or not to dissect?—looking into the balance between moral philosophy and hands-on scientific practice.
During the dissection, students used their fine motor skills by manipulating dissecting tools, mimicking surgical techniques, and gained valuable insights into the anatomy of a mammalian heart. They focused on proper dissection techniques, the orientation of the heart, identifying the artery and vein, locating the chambers, and examining key structural features.
This hands-on activity not only enriched their understanding of anatomy but also encouraged critical thinking and ethical reflection, bridging science and philosophy in a truly interdisciplinary approach.
Grade 9
Interdisciplinary units in the MYP help students make real-world connections, think critically, and apply knowledge across subjects. They enhance problem-solving, collaboration, and engagement while preparing students for future learning.
Grade 6
A Celebration of Culture and Creativity!
This week, our Grade 6 students embarked on an exciting interdisciplinary journey, exploring the rich and diverse cultures of the Arab world. Through research, they discovered fascinating details about various countries and worked collaboratively to create engaging websites, persuading others to visit these beautiful destinations.
Beyond research, students participated in hands-on workshops, from traditional Arabic toy-making to the dynamic art of calligraffiti. They even embraced the rhythm of Arabic music by creating fun lip-syncing videos to their favorite songs!
Working together in teams, they developed their final websites with creativity and enthusiasm. More than just learning about different cultures, they reflected on the deeper meaning of culture itself. It was an inspiring week of discovery, teamwork, and appreciation for the incredible diversity within the Arab world!
Grades 6-8
Grading students' books shows care by providing meaningful feedback, recognizing their effort, and guiding improvement. It helps build confidence, keeps students accountable, and demonstrates a teacher’s commitment to their learning.
We are elated to share the grand success of our students in the FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) competition! Our talented team has won First Place in Robot Performance and emerged as the Runner-Up in Core Values.
The FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) is a global robotics program that introduces children to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) through engaging, hands-on learning experiences. Participants gain real-world problem-solving skills by working collaboratively on themed challenges. In the 2024-2025 season, the SUBMERGED℠ challenge invites teams to use creative thinking and LEGO® technology to explore the ocean's layers, bringing their discoveries to the surface as they "sea" into the future.
We are proud to announce that team METAL MECH secured first place in Robot Performance and was also honoured with the Core Values Award. The talented team members are:
Anannya
Selda
Bhadra
Sanchitha
