Week Sixteen - January 17th, 2024
Dear Parents,
Many of our students have great success in activities outside school. Please do not hesitate to share these successes with your child’s homeroom teacher and grade leader. Today I would like to mention brothers Maciej F (G2) and Simon F (G8) for their remarkable go-karting successes, thanks to their dedication and determination. Maciej has topped the podium so far in each round of the IAME championship and Simon has also had rewards for this efforts in the older category. Well done, and we wish both boys the best for the season!
This week has been a wonderful celebration of literacy and I would like to thank all involved, particularly our librarians, Ms Louise and Ms Terri. In one of the photos below, you can see Ms Louise and Mr Joe talking to parents about how to improve literacy across the curriculum and at home.
We also had a book fair and I promise that the photo below was not staged! It is simply wonderful to see our students so engaged. I have spoken to many classes this week and have actually been impressed by just how many of our students are reading books at home. This habit should be maintained throughout their school lives, with less time spent on mobile phone ‘doom scrolling’, which we all know is not healthy or cognitively beneficial. To hear how many students enjoy their reading is heartening and we will do all we can to encourage from the school perspective.
We always try to lead from the front here, and model best practice for our students, so I was pleased to be asked to read to our primary school students. This time, Ms Louise used the green room, so that the story can be seen by the students as I am reading - I hope I don’t look too much like a news reader!
On the subject of literacy, I presented Demid M (G5) with a commendation today. Demid has shown such a love of reading and writing, in English and Russian, and has even had his own book published in Russia. This is an amazing piece of work, complete with illustrations, and I wish Demid the best for his literary career!
This weeks ‘Pot Luck’ event was for Grade 1 parents. Many thanks to Ms. Niamh and team for organizing. We all enjoyed the delicious food on offer.
Finally, the annual GEMS survey for parents will launch on Monday, January 20th. We greatly value your time in completing it and hope you feel confident recommending our school to others. Your feedback—both positive and constructive—is always welcome and helps us enhance our offerings. I’m pleased to share that our last survey saw a record number of promoters, highlighting the strength of our partnership with the parent community. As shown in the graphic below, a score of 9 or 10 on the key question indicates you’re a promoter, ready to recommend us!
I wish you a good weekend.
Kind regards,

The Country Ambassador program was launched in 2021 with the intention of helping connect families with their motherland tongue and country. Small community sub groups have been created to help integrate new families from these specific countries as they enroll at GIS. We encourage you to join your country group via the QR code.
Although as a whole, we are one big family, it’s always nice to connect with those from our country. Ultimately, the goal is to have at least ONE representative for each country.
If you see that your country or ambassador is not listed and you are interested in representing your country, please reach out to us via email at gispa@gemsisak.com
Our Iranian, Egyptian and Latino parents have already started to welcome returning and new parents on a nice breakfast gathering.
We encourage all GIS communities to get together and keep us posted.

Kind reminder to ensure students accounts have enough credit loaded so they do not face issues purchasing food.
