ISSUE 22: Finding Peace in the Pause
As we approach the much-anticipated long weekend, it’s essential to reflect on the benefits of stepping away from the daily grind and embracing moments of rest. In our hyper-connected world, taking intentional time to disconnect can be transformative for both our mental and physical well-being.
Research highlights the restorative power of breaks. Studies show that downtime not only reduces stress but also enhances creativity and cognitive function (Glynn et al., 2016). When we disconnect from technology and routine, our minds are given the freedom to wander—a process linked to problem-solving and innovation (Baird et al., 2012). For students and staff alike, a pause can reignite focus and purpose as we return to our commitments with renewed energy.
However, finding peace in the pause requires more than just stepping away. It involves a conscious effort to truly disengage from what drains us and reconnect with what nourishes us. Here are some research-backed strategies to make the most of your long weekend:
Limit Screen Time
Constant notifications and digital demands can prevent us from achieving true rest. Studies have found that excessive screen time correlates with higher levels of anxiety and reduced sleep quality (Twenge et al., 2018). Consider setting boundaries, such as screen-free mornings or evenings, to foster a sense of calm.
Spend Time in Nature
A walk in the park or a hike in a nearby trail can significantly improve mood and reduce cortisol levels, the stress hormone (Bratman et al., 2015). Even brief exposure to green spaces can enhance feelings of well-being and connectedness.
Engage in Mindful Activities
Activities like journaling, meditation, or yoga have been shown to improve emotional regulation and promote a sense of peace (Hölzel et al., 2011). Dedicate some time to mindfulness this weekend to ground yourself in the present moment.
Prioritize Connection
While disconnecting from devices, reconnect with loved ones. Quality time with family and friends fosters a sense of belonging and reduces feelings of isolation (Holt-Lunstad et al., 2010).
As we embrace this break, remember that self-care is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. Use these days to rest, recharge, and realign with what matters most. By disconnecting from the external noise, we create space to reconnect with ourselves, our loved ones, and our passions.
Let’s return to school with a renewed sense of energy, ready to tackle the challenges and opportunities ahead.
