Week Fifteen - January 10th, 2024
Dear Parents & Guardians,
Happy New Year!
I would also like to extend a very warm welcome to all new families who officially joined GIS this week, and a special welcome back to our returning families. I trust that you had an enjoyable winter break catching up with family and friends, and that your sons and daughters returned to us refreshed and ready for a new term.
As we begin the new term, I’d like to remind families of the significance of wearing the GIS uniform with pride. Our uniform represents unity, respect, and school spirit, and it’s important that students present themselves in a manner that reflects these values. This means ensuring their attire is always neat, complete, and in line with the uniform policy, including wearing black shoes. While we encourage students to avoid makeup, senior secondary students who choose to wear it should keep it to a bare minimum and make sure that it is natural looking. Similarly, jewellery should remain simple and understated, such as stud earrings or a watch, to maintain a polished and professional appearance in line with our school guidelines.
I would like to remind parents that our Academic Priority sessions take place every Monday afternoon from 3:15 to 4:15. These sessions are a fantastic opportunity for students to receive extra support in subjects where they may be facing challenges or need additional guidance. Led by our dedicated teachers, the sessions are designed to help students deepen their understanding, build confidence, and stay on track academically. We encourage students to take full advantage of this valuable resource to ensure they feel supported in their learning journey.
There are a number of significant events on the horizon that I would like to draw your attention to.
Next Friday, our Grade 10 students will take part in the Subject Selection Fair, an invaluable opportunity for them to connect with Grade 11 students and gain firsthand insights into the subjects on offer. This peer-to-peer engagement provides essential guidance as they make important decisions about their academic pathways.
Additionally, the much-anticipated Personal Project Exhibition is just around the corner. This annual event is always a highlight of the academic calendar, showcasing the incredible creativity, effort, and resilience our Grade 10 students have demonstrated over recent months. I’m eager to hear the inspiring stories behind their projects and the diverse journeys they have taken while completing the project.
At the end of January, we’ll embark on Week Without Walls/Interdisciplinary Week. This is a compulsory school week that offers students unique opportunities for learning beyond the classroom. For those not attending a Week Without Walls trip, attendance on campus is required each day. Meanwhile, Grade 12 students will dedicate this time to completing their Group 4 Project, a vital component of the DP.
Finally, I’d like to extend my congratulations to our Grade 6 students for their enthusiastic participation in the Advisory Games yesterday. It was heartwarming to see so many of them laughing, collaborating and enjoying time with their peers in such a vibrant and social setting.
Kind regards
Ms Amanda
Head of Secondary School
