Week Thirteen - November 25th 2022
Dear Parents,
I commended Mashal K, Grade 2 student this week, for her excellent artwork which will be sent to the GEMS corporate office. Each GEMS school has been asked to send one piece of art for display in the central office. Grade 2 students have explored Vincent van Gogh’s “Vase of Sunflowers” series and have learned about the dynamics of acrylic paint.
Mashal is a visually impaired student and used her sense of touch and fine motor skills to produce this 3D piece. Mashal and her Learning Support Assistant, Ms Jabeen, have both mastered braille and the colours on the painting are written in braille. Mashal has used a special brush which can be held more firmly. All Mashal’s tools and paint are also labelled with the braille system so that she can develop agency in her artwork. We are sure that all those in our corporate office will enjoy this piece by Mashal – we are very proud of her!
I had a visit to my office this week from three student ‘UAE Ambassadors’. I would like to commend these amazing Grade 12 students for providing such a good example to younger students and modelling what it means to be a global citizen. Fahad A, Mehdi A and Abdulla A asked me if I would like to learn some Arabic words from them. We then spent another forty minutes talking about Emirati culture, which was a real insight and so fascinating.
I would like to thank them for their time and their mature approach. I look forward to hearing more.
This week has been the most active ever for our Primary School in their ‘Sports Week’ and I congratulate all students, teachers and of course Mr Ryan and our sports department for all their efforts. In particular, I thoroughly enjoyed the ‘Marathon’. The PYP PE team set the Primary School a challenge of walking/running a distance of 690km in the space of one school day. That is the distance from our very own GIS to the Al Bayt stadium in Qatar where the opening ceremony of the Football World Cup took place. Not only did our students and staff successfully complete the challenge, in Mr Ryan’s words, ‘We absolutely smashed it! At the close of the day, we had travelled an amazing distance of 781km! Well done to all; however, a special mention has to go to our PreK students, who kicked off the day and travelled 40km!’
Finally, thank you again for your supportive survey comments and taking the time to provide feedback.
Have a lovely weekend.
Kind regards,
Simon Herbert
Dear Parents/guardians
Greetings from the GIS clinic.
GEMS International School is a NUT-FREE school.
Peanut/ nut allergy is the most common food allergy in children.
We are aware that some pupils in our school have a nut allergy. In some cases, the allergy is so severe that, if they come in contact with a nut product, they can suffer life-threatening consequences. An allergic reaction may occur through the ingestion of nuts or foods containing nut traces. However, a reaction may also occur by physical contact with a person or object that has come into contact with nuts.
To help keep all of our children safe, it is vital that you do not provide food containing any sort of nuts in your child’s lunch box in school or for school trips. Such things should also not be provided for party food/ special occasions or school functions.
Please help us provide a nut-free school and assist those parents who have children who may have a life-threatening reaction.
Best Regards,
Dr. Sanam Shaikh

It was a difficult week for our Jaguars with all squads missing key players making it extra difficult for them. A special mention to U19 girls football squad member Vinelle V G12, who suffered a bad injury in their game. Everyone at GIS wishes her a full and speedy recovery.
Congratulations to our 3 students who represented the school in the inaugural interschool functional fitness competition which took place at Gems Metropole on Tuesday. They were incredible ambassadors for the school both in how they performed and behaved throughout the event.

Each year, money is raised to spread the awareness of Women’s Health and Men’s Health within our school community.
With the continuous support of parents, we’re happy to announce that we raised 7,500 AED which will be donated to YallaGive; a campaign through Al Jalila Hospital.
Aside from this amazing donation, GISPA and GIS contributed 12,000 AED for the initiative of the Pink Caravan.
On the day the Pink Caravan was at our school, it performed over 80 examination on women within our GIS community, as well as additional free services regarding their examination if needed.
We are truly blown away by the results of these two months of initiatives. It not only enhanced the campus experience, but it also impacted so many families on an individual, more personal level.
None of these amazing moments would have been possible without the support of our parents. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
