Week Thirteen - November 25th 2022
Dear Parents & Guardians,
Many of our Grade 7 and 10 students had their eyes tested this week as per DHA requirements. Thank you to Dr Sanam for making necessary arrangements. Should there be a need to contact you regarding your son/daughter's eyesight, the Clinic will reach out to you in due course. Please note that those not tested, will do so in coming weeks.
I would like to focus on assessment in the MYP this week, as there have been a few queries from parents recently. Assessment in the MYP is continuous, meaning that all assessments and tasks your child completes in class from August to June are combined to generate their grade for each subject. All subjects are assessed using four criteria (commonly referred to as Criterion A, B, C & D).
As a rule of thumb, these tend to focus on subject knowledge & understanding; research skills; critical thinking skills; and communication of these. In each subject, students will have multiple opportunities throughout the year, either through formative or summative assessment, to demonstrate their understanding as teachers gather evidence in these four areas.
In the example above, all criteria have been assessed in some capacity. It is important to note that the MYP only works with whole numbers and we do not average. Teacher's professional judgement based on tasks and class work lead to the decision of what the interim level is. Once this is established, the results for all four criteria are added together. Therefore, to establish the interim grade above, the following applies:
8+ 7 + 5 + 6 = 26
This translate to a grade of 6 when reference is made to the MYP Grade Boundaries. The MYP requires that all criteria be assessed at least twice each year, hence the above example is not an end of year grade as Criteria C & D have only been assessed once. This is why the grades received in the Term One and Two reports are interim grades only, with the End of Year report containing the final grade.
Ms Sandy ran a tremendous ConnectEd session recently on this very topic and you can see the relevant slides below should you wish to know more.
Enjoy your week ahead.

IMPORTANT DATES FOR SECONDARY STUDENTS
November 28 National Day Celebration
December 8 Winterfest
December 9 Term 1 Report published | End of term 1
Last year, the amazing Student ELT launched the Secondary Student Hub for secondary students. This is an ongoing collaborative project between the Student ELT, Inclusion Team & Grade Leaders.
The Secondary Student Hub will remain the students access point for the new social groups and peer mentoring, as well as signing up for the already established peer tutoring programme.
Students will also be able to find links to ECAs, student voice initiative, counsellor referral forms, mindset matters and homeroom information. We are really proud of the work that the Student ELT have put in to this so far and look forward to seeing their expansion of the site.
*Students must be logged into their gemsisak gmail account to access the site.

Grade 6
Students have been learning how to express themselves and talk about their identity and their family in French or Spanish. This week they presented to the class a presentation all about what they have learned in this first unit. It was amazing to see our students be able to speak fluently about themselves for over a whole minute!
Grade 7
Role play. The designer and the model. Every student had to play the role of a designer and present his collection by describing in French the models. They used the verbs, colors agreement, opinions and played their favorite music.
Grade 7
Students have been developing their sewing skills in G7 Textiles this week by creating their final products for their Monster project. Students have spent the last few weeks researching the designer ‘The Felt Mistress’ and developing their own individual designs based on her work. During this project, students have learned many useful life skills such as sewing buttons on to their clothes and hand embroidery stitches. We are looking forward to seeing their finished products!
DP1
DP Business students had an engaging session learning about financial literacy and financial independence from the team at Cashee.
Grade 6
This week we have been reinforcing learning about cells and the difference between plant cells and animal cells in terms of organelles. The best way to do this was by making models of cells using jelly and candy to represent organelles and what even better students were able to eat them.
Homeroom begins at 8:10am, following the UAE national anthem.
students are considered late if they arrive to class after the anthem.
Monday to Thursday: 3:15pm
Friday: 11:40am
Please arrange for students to be collected promptly after dismissal. Secondary students are not permitted to gather inside the Main Reception or Slices Cafeteria while awaiting collection. They may wait in the adjacent courtyard or the outdoor area at the front of the school, being careful not to block doorways.
*Parents may enter the school campus via Gate 4, Gate 6 and Gate 8.
Digital devices, such as smartphones and tablets, make online platforms and content easily accessible. And, while there are many benefits of seamless accessibility and connectivity, there are also many potential risks - to the health, well-being and even the safety of young people - that must be considered by young people themselves, as well as by parents and schools. Technological advances are faster than ever and new online platforms are released at a rapid rate, making it challenging to effectively monitor and control (for their own well-being) the online activity of the young people in our care.
Young people will, at times, seek out and/or be inadvertently exposed to inappropriate online content. If and when this is the case, it is important that they feel comfortable and confident to disclose and discuss the matter with trusted adults. While banning smart devices may not be practical (or desirable), implementing agreements around device usage (for instance) is a healthy and productive approach to online media balance and safety. There are a number of useful tips and strategies available to support healthy and well-informed approaches to media use. Please take some time to explore the E-safety: Parent Guidance, which has been created to support GIS parents in this regard.
