Why do we set home learning in the secondary school?
All students in GFM receive home learning. It is an important part of school life as it provides the following for our students:
Reinforces learning: Home learning consolidates the knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom, helping students to better retain and understand the material.
Encourages wider reading and research: It can provide opportunities for students to explore topics beyond the curriculum, fostering a deeper understanding and broadening their knowledge base.
Develops responsibility: Home learning encourages students to manage their time effectively and take ownership of their learning, fostering independence and self-discipline.
How does your child know when their home learning is being set?
We have a home learning schedule that outlines when specific subjects set home learning if your child is in Years 7-11. If your child is in Sixth form, students are generally recommended to study an additional 15-20 hours per week outside of their regular class time. This includes time spent on homework, revision, wider reading, and preparing for exams or BTEC assigned work. The exact number can vary depending on the student's workload, the subjects they are taking, and their individual learning pace.
Who marks your child's home learning?
All home learning should be marked. It will depend on the subject and type of piece of home learning as to who marks it. For example, sometimes it is more appropriate for the child to self mark in lesson, or perhaps a peer will mark it and provide them with feedback. If the home learning requires deeper feedback, then the teacher will mark it.
