If students participate in CONNECT on Fridays, then they will be more successful in school, feel a greater sense of belonging and connection to each other, community and culture, and they will build important CORE competency skills, which will lead to a more positive life!
Program Theory Development:
WHY do we believe this activity will lead to this result?
Self-determination, choice, and reward are the motivations which inspire this program. The obstacles we are trying to overcome include ambivalence, and culture of avoidance on Fridays. I believe this program will invigorate our learners by giving them:
Self-determination and choice to expand personal interests.
Experiential and hands-on learning opportunities.
A break from routine and the ability to relate to staff and peers in a more casual, unstructured environment.
Pleasure and sense of community from fun, social activities.
This creative approach to a problem (learner fatigue) aligns with our overarching philosophy of addressing the needs of the whole student. It is built on student choice and interest, relationship, creativity, and flexibility, which are proven foundations for success. CONNECT also appeals to the hands-on, kinesthetic learning style, which because of TREC's small size and unique timetable, is often under represented due to limited ability to offer these kinds of elective options (no shop classes, group PE classes, no foods or textiles courses etc.).
