SCHRAMM MEDALS AT STATE MEET
by Richard Furst, Grant Boyd, & Kyle Lewis
Staten Island- Goshen senior Kayla Schramm had her pick of which events she wanted to compete in at the New York State Championship meet. Afterall, Schramm is one of very few athletes in New York State to ever meet the state standard in four different running events. Throughout the season, Schramm was able to earn the standard at 3000m, 1500m, 1000m, and 600m, all on her first attempt.
Primarily a longer middle distance runner, Schramm decided to race both the 1000m and the 600m last weekend at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Complex on the beautiful south shore of Staten Island. The 1000m went off first and Schramm got out slowly, but 300m into the race made a move to get into the lead pack. Right then, she caught an elbow which sent her into the next lane and broke her stride. Over the next 700m Schramm was alone to hold her own, but the leaders were just out of reach and she crossed the finish line at 2:57.84, finishing 12th overall.
Undaunted, Schramm shrugged off that result knowing that she would toe the line again in 80 minutes for the 600m dash. With focused determination, Schramm got off the line very fast and was in good position in fourth at the breakline. Her first 200m was 29.84. Schramm held her position through the 400m at 62.65, and then opened her stride and began to close on third.
Coming off the last curve and closing hard, Schramm moved into third and then caught the girl in second and leaned at the line to leave no doubt. Her time of 1:36.66 was a personal best and second only to Kate Laskoski on the Goshen all-time list. But then the seeded heat took to the track and Schramm had to wait to see how many from that heat ran faster. Four athletes from the public schools did so, leaving Schramm sixth for public schools and seventh in the New York State Federation.
With just New Balance Indoor Nationals next weekend at the Armory left in the winter track season, Schramm is positioned well in both the 800m and the 1-mile. What she will run then depends on exactly what she wants. It’s a great position to be in. Choose your race and find your limit! Good luck to Kayla Schramm on March 13.
SCHRAMM, MCCARTHY, DIORIO EARN BIDS TO WINTER TRACK STATE MEET
by Kyle Lewis, Grant Boyd, & Richard Furst
NYC - The winter track season is now coming to a close and three athletes of the Gladiator team are still in contention for All-State honors, as the Section IX State Qualifier meet was held this past Saturday at the Armory.
Senior Christina Diorio got the party started as she produced a spirited performance in the 3000m and came up just short of earning a bid. Diorio was never thinking of competing in the event but just last week with the encouragement of coach Boyd and outdoor coach Manaseri, decided to race for 3,200 meters in order to get a qualifying time. Diorio’s 3200m time was enough to earn her an entry to the event and as the seeding turned out, Diorio was seeded in the top three.
In the 3K, the top two finishers will represent Section IX at the state meet and the third finisher becomes the alternate for the multi-distance intersectional relay. As the race unfolded, Diorio found herself in third a full six seconds behind second place. But in the final 600m, Diorio made a sustained surge and managed to draw even and battled for second. Her time of 11:11.82 was just .6 seconds out of second place. The time was a personal record by 26 seconds.
Next up was Kayla Schramm in the 1000-meter run. Schramm has been racing varsity since the 8th grade and went into the race as the top seed. Schramm parlayed her experience into a controlled race and led from start to finish to win in a fine 3:00.15. Later, Schramm did the same thing to win the 600-meter in a strong 1:38.58.
While Diorio and Schramm were excelling on the track, fellow senior Areyanna McCarthy was excelling in the field as she placed second in the triple jump at 34 feet, 1 inch. McCarthy has been an asset to the team as a leader, and has had a huge impact by guiding underclassmen in the jumps.
All three seniors will travel to the Ocean Breeze Track and Field complex on Staten Island to compete this coming Saturday. As a community, we are proud of the performances of our Lady Gladiators.
There were many other outstanding performances and personal records set at the State Qualifier meet.
Sophomore sprinter Jaden Bisono ran another personal best in the preliminary race of the 55-meter hurdles, finishing in 8.03 which is the fastest time for a Goshen athlete in the event in the past 15-20 years and quite possibly a school record (awaiting official confirmation). Bisono followed that up with another personal record in the 300m, running 37.18, which again may be a school record, but is definitely the fastest Goshen time in over 20 years.
Junior Charissa Logan PR’d twice in the 55-meter hurdles. Logan ran the fastest time of the preliminary round (9.15), and in the finals shaved another tenth of a second off her time, finishing in 9.05, coming in third place overall. Later, Logan jumped to a new PR in the long jump of 14 feet, 9 inches.
Junior Caleb Ayau set a new personal best in the 3200m, running 10:19.09. Chelsea Henry and Dylin Duggan both ran new personal bests in the 1000m, with Henry finishing in 3:21.40 and Duggan running 3:24.56. Junior Chayse Clarke-Martin PR’d in the 55m dash with a time of 7.8 Senior Emily Dong PR’d in weight throw with an all-time best of 22 feet, 4¼ inches.
While the long winter season has come to an end for most Goshen athletes, there's a lot to be proud of and look forward to, as the spring track season is set to begin on March 14.

Goshen competes at first-ever Section IX hosted invitational at NYC Armory
by Kyle Lewis, Grant Boyd, & Richard Furst
On Sunday, January 30, the Gladiators, along with 28 other Section IX teams traveled to the iconic 168th St. Armory in New York City to compete in the first-ever Section IX hosted invitational on the historic track, where just 24 hours earlier, Olympians and pro-athletes had competed, setting world records at the 114th Millrose Games.
Many younger Goshen athletes were afforded the opportunity to compete indoors for the first time this winter, and some veteran athletes competed in events that they don’t have as much experience contesting.
Sophomore Jaden Bisono kicked off the action for the Gladiators, running the 55-meter high hurdles for the first time indoors this season, finishing in a personal best 8.47 seconds. The sixth place time in the preliminary round was good enough to qualify for the finals, in which he improved to 8.37 for 5th place overall. Charissa Logan also performed extremely well in the hurdles, finishing the preliminary race in 9.43 for second place and running 9.49 in the finals for fourth place overall. Eighth grade phenom Abigail Stock also ran well, finishing her first indoor race in 11.77.
In the 1000-meter run, junior Caleb Ayau continued to improve, running a personal best 2:50.22, while freshman Noah Klugman ran a new PR of 3:06.12. One of the strongest performances of the day; however, goes to junior Joseph Carmona. Carmona went out aggressively, staying towards the front of the pack, taking the lead and setting the pace for much of the race. Carmona ran a new personal best of 3:05.30, winning his heat. Earlier in the meet, Carmona ran the 1600-meter race in a similar fashion, again winning his heat and setting a new personal best time of 5:02.17, a 30 second PR from his previous best. Also running the 1600m was freshman Ryan Schramm. Schramm went out fast, but positioned himself in the middle of the pack. As the race thinned out, he moved his way up front, as other runners dropped back, unable to maintain the fast pace. Schramm went on to run 4:59.98, breaking 5 minutes for the first time.
In the 600-meter dash, a pair of senior athletes ran new personal bests, as Kayla Schramm finished in 1:37.64 for first place, and Andrew Rampulla ran 1:28.62. Schramm’s performance qualifies her for the championship division at Indoor Nationals.
While Schramm was excelling on the track, Areyanna McCarthy was excelling in the field, as she made her season debut in the long jump at 14 feet, 8 inches, as Logan was right behind her at 14 feet, 3 inches. Then Stock again turned heads as her debut in the triple jump earned her second place at 31 feet, 1 inch.
Later, Stock joined McCarthy, Logan, and Bella Venezian to anchor the 800-meter relay with a sparkling 29.8 leg to bring the baton home in a team time of 1:56.90
The boys’ 4x200-meter relay posted a season’s best performance, with Michael Flores leading off, running 24.6. Michael DeRosa was up next with a split time of 25.8. DeRosa handed off to James Dimitrov, who ran 26.6, and anchoring the relay was Jaden Bisono, who ran 23.9, for a total time of 1:42.69.
Next up for the Gladiators is the Division III Championship meet which will be held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island on February 12.
Schramm and McCarthy medal in New Balance Games
by Kyle Lewis, Grant Boyd, & Richard Furst
As the dead of winter set in, seven key members of the Goshen winter track team headed to the iconic 168th St. Armory to compete in the New Balance Games, and seniors Areyanna McCarthy and Kayla Schramm earned medals in their respective events. Schramm earned the first medal, gold, by winning the 1000-meter run in a season best 2:59.21. Schramm got out fast and led from start to finish and held off a strong challenge in the final 200 meters to win by .2 seconds. Schramm is now ranked ninth in the state at 1000m, just 3.46 seconds off the state’s top mark this year.
Later, McCarthy took to the runway for the triple jump and overcame a foul on her first attempt to put together the best series of jumps in her career, as she lept 35 feet, 8 ½ inches on her fifth jump for 3rd place overall.
At the end of the day, Schramm doubled back to race the 600m. The events’ marquee runner was Rhode Island star Sophia Gorriaran, but Gorriaran missed the seeded heat, leaving the door open. Schramm wasted no time as she jumped to the lead and again led from start to finish and again held off a strong challenge to win in a personal best 1:38.20. But Gorriaran was able to race in the second heat and won by posting the nation's ninth fastest time ever in 1:27.70. Schramm earned silver and now is Goshen High School’s second fastest 600m runner ever. Kate Laskoski ran the Goshen record in 2017 at the State meet in 1:36.13. Christina Diorio also ran well in the 600m, posting a 3 second PR of 1:44.91. Earlier in the meet, Diorio also PR’d in the 1000-meter run, finishing the race in 3:09.16.
On the boys’ team, Jackson Diglio, Caleb Ayau, and Ryan Schramm began the day with the 2-mile run. Not having run the event since the beginning of December, Diglio and Schramm were determined to improve their previous times. They both went out strong, with Diglio towards the front of the pack, running the first half in a fast 5:07. Schramm settled in towards the middle of the pack, running 5:14 at the halfway point. Both boys slowed down slightly in the second half, but maintained even splits and were able to finish the race strong. Diglio finished with a personal best of 10:27.08 and Schramm finished with a time of 10:33.29, which ranks him at the top of New York State in the 2-mile amongst freshmen and 7th in the state when his time is converted to the 3200m. After recently coming back from injury, junior Caleb Ayau also competed in the 2-mile for the first time this season, running a fine 10:37.08.
Later, senior Andrew Rampulla competed in the 1000-meter run and the 600-meter, and posted personal bests in both events. Rampulla ran 2:44.11 in the 1000m, and 1:29.40 in the 600m, performing strongly throughout both races.
Next up for the team is the OCIAA Invitational meet also being held at the Armory on January 30th, and then the girls’ seniors elite distance medley relay team will compete in the Varsity Classic on February 7th.
Schramm posts stellar performances in Stanner Games
by Kyle Lewis, Grant Boyd, & Richard Furst
Over the past five years, Kayla Schramm has demonstrated her strength and versatility countless times, performing well in events ranging from the 400-meter dash to the 3,000-meter run. While Schramm prefers to specialize in the 800m through the mile, and is currently the school record holder in those events and everything in between, she is not opposed to stepping out of her comfort zone. On Sunday, January 16, Schramm put forth a spectacular effort in the 3K and followed it up with an equally impressive performance as anchor of the 4x800-meter relay at the 2022 Stanner Games in the world class track venue, the 168th Street Armory.
Schramm went into the 3,000-meter invitational race of the Stanner Games seeded 6th out of 14 girls. When the gun went off, Schramm strategically positioned herself towards the middle of the front pack of runners. She would remain in that position for much of the race, running even splits and staying in fifth place for the majority of the 15-lap race. Going into the final lap, Schramm bolted ahead, leaving the pack in the dust to run her final 200 meters in 33 seconds. Schramm ended up finishing in 10:15.29 for second place, running a personal best by over 18 seconds. Later in the meet, Schramm teamed up with Christina Diorio, Chelsea Henry, and Dylin Duggan, to run the 4x800-meter relay. When Kayla Schramm received the baton, her relay team was in 9th place. Never one to back down from a challenge, Schramm chased down the competition, picking them off one-by-one, taking her team into 3rd place. Schramm finished her anchor leg of the relay, running an impressive 2:18.6.
While Kayla Schramm’s performances set the bar, there were many other personal bests and strong performances for the Gladiators throughout the day. The freshmen boys’ sprint medley relay team kicked things off by earning 3rd place medals with a time of 4:24.21. Kiran Foster led off, running the 400m leg in 61.4. Jafar Hayes and Juan Naranjo both performed well, running the 200m legs in 28.1 and 29.1, respectively. Closing out the race with the 800m leg was Ryan Schramm, with a time of 2:25.6.
In the 1000m, senior Christina Diorio ran to an 8 second personal record, finishing in 10th place overall, running 3:10.88. Dylin Duggan also raced to a new PR in the 1000m, running 3:34.61. Senior Jackson Diglio ran 2:51.3, junior Caleb Ayau ran 2:55.35, freshman Noah Klugman ran 3:07.18, and junior Joseph Carmona ran 3:15.56, all indoor track PR’s. The 1600m saw sophomore Gianna Catalano run an impressive 6:01.5.
Not to be outdone, the Goshen sprinters also posted several personal bests. Charissa Logan made her Armory debut in the 55-meter hurdles, running 10.09 for a personal record. Reilly St. Lawrence also set a new indoor PR in the hurdles, finishing 6th in the sophomore division. James Dimitrov came close to his PR in the 55-meter hurdles, but PR’d in the 300-meter dash, running 40.58. Jaden Bisono ran 39.45 in the 300m for 13th place, with Michael DeRosa (41.06), Brian Shannon (42.82), and Daniel Hartley (43.11) all posting marked improvements. Also achieving new personal bests in the 300m were Ashley Williams who ran 48.95 and Chayse Clarke-Martin, with a time of 48.65.
In high jump, Areyanna McCarthy earned another medal, clearing 4 feet, 10 inches for 5th place and in triple jump, ended up in 7th place with a jump of 33 feet, 6 ¼ inches.
With winter weather in full swing, the schedule moving forward is uncertain for the Goshen winter track and field team; however, on January 30, Section IX will be hosting its first indoor meet of the season at the Armory.

Several other Gladiators made their Armory debuts and scored in shot put, as senior Emily Dong placed fifth with a put of 22 feet, 8 ¼ inches, while sophomore Cameron Frawley also placed fifth with a put of 24 feet, inches for a new personal best. The sophomore pole vault saw Reilly St. Lawrence take the win as she cleared the bar at 8 feet, 6 inches.
But it was the track where most of the medals were earned. The boys novice 800-meter relay of James Dimitrov, Daniel Hartley, Brian Shannon, and Andrew Rampulla placed sixth in 1:48.30. Rampulla sparkled with a fine 24.49 anchor leg. The girls novice 800-meter relay and 1600-meter relay both placed eighth as St. Lawrence, Reilly Tondini, Emily Dowling, and Bella Venezian teamed up to run 2:10.70. Later Tondini and Venezian were joined by Jacklyn Vanderpool and Gianna Catalano to run 5:07.22 for the 1600m relay.
In the marquee event of the day, the invitational 1 mile, Kayla Schramm placed fourth overall with a personal best effort of 5:01.54. Schramm ran gamely for six of the eight laps right with the top three before lapsing on the seventh lap. Schramm regained her form and finished strong just 8 seconds out of first place. Schramm's time breaks Olivia Elston’s school record set in 2017. Later on, Schramm took to the track again, this time in the 800m and again placed 4th in a fine 2:21.14 effort.
Kayla Schramm wins the 1500m at the North Shore Invitational
by Kyle Lewis, Grant Boyd, & Richard Furst
On Thursday, December 30, the Gladiators closed out the year with another meet at the Armory, competing at the North Shore Invitational.
Senior Kayla Schramm once again impressed with an outstanding performance in the 1500-meter run. Schramm ran a strong, tactical race, maintaining even splits throughout. By the end, it would come down to Schramm and Allison Reid of Northport. When Reid would attempt to make a tactical move, Schramm would counter with her own move, showing her poise and experience. On the final lap, both girls would surge, but it was Schramm who out-kicked the competition, running 32 seconds for the final 200 meters. Schramm took first place with a personal best time of 4:43.65 which qualifies her for the New Balance Nationals in March.
Fellow senior Areyanna McCarthy also jumped to a new personal best in triple, leaping 35 feet, 2¼ inches for third place, which meets the New Balance Nationals rising standard. McCarthy also earned a fourth place medal in high jump.
There were many other PR’s and strong performances at North Shore. Senior Jackson Diglio ran to a new personal best in both the 1000-meter run (2:51.7) and the 1600m (4:49.05). Gladiators return to Armory for Coach Saint Invitational
by Kyle Lewis, Grant Boyd, & Richard Furst
On December 17, the Goshen winter track and field team returned to the 168th Street Armory in New York City for the first time since February 2020. The Gladiators competed at the Coach Saint Invitational, named for long-time Goshen resident and Warwick Valley coaching legend, Tim St. Lawrence. For many of the Goshen athletes in attendance, this was their first ever opportunity to compete on an indoor track. For some of the veteran athletes on the team, it was a long-awaited return. For everyone participating, it was a valuable learning experience, with many athletes achieving new personal bests.
Senior Kayla Schramm kicked off the meet for Goshen running the 1000-meter race. Schramm went out fast, completing the first 200m in under 34 seconds, remaining in third place for the first 2 laps. During the fourth lap, Schramm moved up into first place, but in the final stretch, a runner from Northport outran Schramm to take the lead. Schramm ended up taking second place, running an impressive 3:00.51. Later, Schramm ran the girls’ 1-mile, finishing in 2nd place once again. Fellow senior Chelsea Henry competed in the next heat of the 1K, running an outstanding race to finish in 3:29.16, a personal record by 7 seconds.

In the beginning of the race, Diorio was boxed-in, completing her first 200m in 10th place. Diorio worked her way up during the second half of the race, passing several runners to finish in third place overall. Later, Diorio ran the mile on short rest, finishing in 10th place overall. In the boys’ 600m, senior Andrew Rampulla went out hard, but 100m into the race, a competitor stepped on his heel, causing a shoe to fall off. He continued to race the final 500m with one shoe, running even splits throughout the race to finish in a personal best time of 1:31.05, finishing in 7th place overall.
The next event was the boys’ 1-mile with freshmen Ryan Schramm and Kiran Foster running for the Gladiators. Schramm went out fast, leading the pack from the very beginning of the race. He covered the first 200 meters in 33 seconds. Schramm settled in, running even 39 second splits for the remainder of the race, maintaining his lead. In the final lap, he surged ahead with another 33 second split, finishing the race in 5:02.14 to win his heat. Amongst freshmen, Schramm is currently ranked 4th in New York State in the 1-mile race. Kiran Foster followed, running a strong race, staying in the middle of the pack with an 800m split of 2:36. He went on to finish in 5:24.
In the boys’ 55-meter hurdles, James Dimitrov ran a personal best time of 9.39 to finish in 9th place overall. Later, he ran the 300-meter dash in 40.67 in one of the outside lanes, adjusting to the challenge of running on banked turns. Teammate Jaden Bisono ended up finishing in 11th place overall in the 300m, running a time of 39.35 for a new personal record. Earlier Bisono ran a speedy 6.94 seconds in the 55-meter dash to finish in 8th place overall.
