Sandra Cinto: May I Know How To Be The Sun On Cloudy Days
TANYA BONAKDAR GALLERY
Over the summer I went to many museums with my family and was inspired to create a project about curating. To begin my process, I interviewed my mentor Massimiliano Gioni the artistic director of the new museum. His advice was to visit as many art exhibits as I could to get a better understanding of the different types of exhibits that exist. Over the course of a few weeks I visited many museums and did a gallery crawl through the Chelsea art district. Alongside my visits I worked on finalizing my idea for the project and researching more about the curation process.
The first IP10 week I focused on finding an idea for the theme of my exhibit and getting more real world experience. My first idea for a theme was an exhibit exploring color. Throughout the week I also began to research art pieces for the exhibit. Towards the end of the week Cecilia Alemani the head of Highline Art invited me to go on a gallery tour with her and her colleagues. Not only did I see galleries that I had never heard of I also got to hear from artists about their artwork. Additionally, getting to talk with the curators really helped me understand the field better. I also went to an artist talk at an exhibit I had visited earlier to hear from the artists about their process.
Between the two weeks of IP10 I came across an old picture book I had about Imogen Cunningham (yes it was originally given to me because we have the same name). I decided that I wanted to switch my theme to focus on her photography. To start the process of the model I first created a preliminary sketch and a 3D model on sketchup. I also ordered materials to begin the model and began the process of building the model. I finished building the model over Spring Break. Additionally, I created a catalog that contained information about each artwork in the exhibit.
After creating a preliminary sketch I measured and then cut out each of the individual pieces. After this process I narrowed down the artworks to the ones I thought best fit into the exhibit. Next I sized each of the artworks, printed them out, and cut them out. My next step was prepping the walls by painting them. After that I laid out and then glued each photograph to the walls. I then assembled the entire model together. Finally, I added the interactive element to the exhibit: a larger than life garden in the entrance.
